I have an original orange imac. The internal disc drive has not worked for a while. I do have a external LaCie Drive that we had been using to run some OS9 games. The computer now has a flashing file folder with a "?" . I have tried to put the system disc in the external drive and start the computer, but don't know what keys to hold down if any on the key board to get it to read the system disc from the external drive. Any hope??

I did try holding down the "C", but it did not read the external drive.

If it's an original iMac, you need a firmware update to boot from external drives - I guess it's a USB drive? Original iMacs don't have Firewire.

Best bet is probably to replace the internal CD with a new one, they're close to free. Any IDE drive should work.
