A (huge) radio controlled airplane that uses real jet turbines and can reach 280 MPH!

Pretty nifty toy.

I don't know why the guys on Digg are so flipped out about it. Yeah it's cool, but it's not really anything new. The programmer in the office beside me flys RC planes, and he's brought in plenty of videos of his crowd flying stuff like that.

He's got three or four planes. None turbine driven, just props. I think the most expensive one was around $7k maybe? He takes them down to SC to a place called Joe Noll (I think) and flies them in some kind of competition there.

I've seen a few jet engine RC planes when I was a kid and went to a nifty RC Plane exhibition.

Actually, the coolest plane I saw was one that took off and landed on a lake.

Maybe he simply cuts coupons or drives a very cheap car.

Hobbies are very important to some people.

They had a show focusing solely on jet RC planes on Remote Controlled Hobbies on the DIY channel recently.

Very intense.

I am very interested in rc planes, well flight actually, I just don't have 50000 to drop on a plane. I like the acrobatic models though.

Maybe so. That is a lot of $.50 off coupons.

Man, i'd love to try an RC plane sometimes. That looks cool. Lots of $$ though.

All it needs is a hamster for a pilot.

Anyone know of one available?

Wow, that is more blown up. I wish the slideshow would have shown what happened though. Although it was bigger, it probably wasn't faster.

Impressive.

But I'd still go for the HydroFoam thing, it's all-terrain and less clunky.

That's awesome! I'm guessing there's no actual turbine blades in there and it's more of a primitive "plans from the back of popular science engine" kind of turbojet, but that's pretty sweet. Whoever is flying that has some serious skills too.

If any of you want a cool thing to teach your kids about jets (or you just like fire) try these things out. Safe and awesome looking in the dark!

Eh? The engines very likely are real turbines. Just very small. The B-52 I linked uses 8 Wren turbine engines. I have no idea what the F14 uses, but turbines have been in RC aircraft for quite a while.

Also, Turbine RC helis.

Wow! Thanks for that link. I hadn't ever heard of those. I still remember the old jets were more like fan props with a regular engine spinning the blades.

They usually have a big jet show over Deland (sp?) Florida and make a video of it every year. I flew RC planes quite a bit, but found it very difficult due to disorientation of the plane when performing difficult tricks. I put more than my fair share into the ground.

I've also had a small electric plane up over 90 mph, but it was heavily modded and very unstable, especially at slow speeds. I eventually ended up putting this one into the ground face first when I had radio interference. I missed the pit area by about 15 feet, and it was probably this fact alone that made me leave the hobby.

I now enjoy RC trucks. 40+ mph but very, very stable and not disorienting.

I fly the RC airplanes too. Well I used to when I had time.
There is a club dedicated just to the RC jets here.
I've buzzed their field a few times. While I circle, they like to put on an airshow for me.

The early jets were modified turbochargers made by Saab. now 3-4 manufacturers make several size actual jet engines. some are propane powered, some use jet fuel. RC airplanes are not easy to fly, land or take-off. I KNOW!! I did 1/4 scale models of 1930's era racing planes. I was using 38cc Chain saw engines, and 18" props. i could land my Monocoupe D145 on our clubs grass strip. jets usually take a paved strip to land and take off from. Earlier "Jet" models used a Ducted fan powered by a .9 Cubic Inch 2 cycle engine with a tuned pipe.

A better "Coolest Toy" might be the indoor RC electric planes about the same size as that rubber band plane a few posts above. They are raced inside a gym and they use the basketball hoops hanging from the ceiling as the pylons!
