I have a MacBook Pro on the way (glee!), and the first thing I usually do on a new computer is image the hard drive, just in case something goes awry (especially given that DiskWarrior and such doesn't work on the Intels yet). I'm concerned because the boot drive on the Intel's are formatted using the GUID partition scheme, and that option doesn't even show up in Disk Utility on 10.4.5/PowerPC.

If I boot it up in Firewire Disk Mode, will a PowerPC iBook be able to read the disk to image it, and then be able to restore later if needed?

It ought to work, at least in theory. In the worst-case scenario, it would be like mounting any other drive format that OSX doesn't support, and that doesn't do any harm to either machine. In other words, it will probably work, and it shouldn't break anything, so it's worth a try.

The new format can be read and written by PPC Macs, and vice versa. Intel Macs just can't boot from a PPC-formatted disk and vice versa.
