Hello, This is just a post to find out the OS that most people are still using on this forum. I'm using 10.3.

My first Mac OS was System 7.5. I've used every Mac OS since then. My favourite Mac OSs are System 7.6.1 and Mac OS X 10.3.x Both share the same beauty and elegance in GUI and in usage.
Oh, and i currently use Mac OS X 10.3.2 and I'm very happy with it.

I guess most users here will be using 10.3 - at least, this is Mac OS X discussions and most of the readers here will be hardcore Mac geeks, always longing for the next up date.

BTW - 10.3.3 takes a long time to be released

10.3 on my Mac. Right now I'm on the Linux machines at school running SuSE 8.2 with GNOME.

Lol, yea that's true, this is a Mac OS X forum... so most people here will most likely be using OS X. My bad...

Mods, could you please move this to the MacNN Lounge than as it would be better fit for this topic.

Thanks,

Ming

The LC II came with System 7.0.1 - well, at least mine did!

Well, I really miss my System 3.2 on my "Fat Mac"; but 10.3 has some new feature that are sometimes handy

Is it true Apple has free downloads of really old systems on there website? I can't find them...

Also, why havn't I ever seen a OS before 7.0. I mean, which Macs had v4, v5, etc...?

You mean these?

And System 7 was really considered the beginning of the 'modern' classic Mac OS (yay, it's oxymoron day!). Anything before ran on really old hardware and really isn't usable today.

You don't see older System software often because Apple made new system software up to System 7.5.5 being compatible with all old hardware except for the very first 128k/512k models. There is a handful of websites like http://www.lowendmac.com/ that will tell you in detail which system runs with which Mac.
The reason that many people use System 6.0.8 on an older Mac is simply the smaller size and that it uses less resources.

Apple has Sytem 6.0.x, 7.0.x and 7.5.3 (plus the 7.5.5 update) as free download on their website. They never charged for any system updates until then. Mac OS 7.6 and upwards would cost you money.

You, sir, are a True Mac Geek.

But yep, mine did too. I just thought System 6 sounded funnier.

Another interesting resource along those lines is Mactracker. It has a database of every Mac ever made (including clones), and has a whole bunch of info about them, including what system software they came with and even what their death chimes sounded like. It's a cool little program.

Thank you Sir, I take this as a compliment (except the Geek part)!
