I've been told to install X11 and Fink, but that's as far as I got. Anyone care to share how they got their Linux software working on their desktop?

i went here, installed a bunch of stuff, used gaim. it tells you what the requirements are, and you can pick them all up right there, as well as a whole ton of other useful stuff.

Thanks very much! However, I have one more question.
When I install it in Fink Commander, do I choose "install binary" or "install from source"? Thanks

Install from source means you compile the app for your computer while the binary is a precompiled file. Installing the binary takes less time. I've tried both with various fink packages and there is rarely any difference. So - it's your call. I'd say either one is fine.

Typically you want to install from binary. The only reason to choose source is if you are running a newer OS (e.g. 10.3) and Fink was not up to date.

I know this is an old post but be happy that I searched the entire forum to see if my question (which had to do with getting GAIM on OSX) was addressed instead of stupidly posting a "HELP ME" post. So my reply to this is, "This is all I need to do? Get X11 and Fink Commander and Fink? I don't need to download anything else or use terminal to do it or what? (I know nothing about coding whatsoever. All I know how to do is to mount disk images and unzip etc....I would just like to get GAIM on my OSX 10.2.8 system.) Thanks for taking the time to read this

OK so I downloaded all of that, used fink commander. It said it downloaded all sorts of packages.. .Now how do I run gaim? I don't know anything about terminal. Isn't there an icon that it created somewhere I can just click?

Just launch x11 and type "gaim" (no quotes) into the terminal (after you have installed it obviously).

The GTK+OSX project probably isn't hurting the process.
AFAIK, the GAIM source is still very heavily integrated with calls to GTK objects and libs. I hear they're working on separating the protocol core out.

With the separation of the core will come a highly anticipated mac chat client release that incorporates it.

WOOO I got GAIM to run but no sounds work. I used the command method and %s but it says authorization denied or something... It says it finds the right directory but it won't play the sound... the dialog box just pops up

When it happens I wouldn't be surprised if any Mac client worth it's salt would start using it ASAP...

But this one client has the most to gain, as it has the best interface of the bunch already, but no multiple services. Proteus isn't all it's quacked up to be. It's buggy, it crashes, and it's slow over here. Fire's interface is um, scary. So what's left?
