If you hold down the Option key the Quit command changes from "Quit" to "Close windows and quit".

Try deleting its saved state ~/library/saved app states/ and app cache.

btw, if you have the feature turned off, option-quit is 'quit and keep windows'.

So when you open QuickTime Player, does it open your last porn movie?

sometimes I have the feeling that the nerds at apple are under the impression that people don't ever watch porn or other questionnable content.. WTF top sites, and then auto-open.. No porn or anything else embarrassing... just a bunch of unwanted and unneeded docs, etc. Is there an alternative to having to hold down the Option key every time you close an App? I can appreciate the fact that Apple may have thought this would be helpful to many, but I'm not among those. Since unchecking the box in preferences doesn't work, maybe a fix is in the works with one of the updates.

Unchecking the box in the prefs works for me. You have to relaunch your apps after you uncheck it for them to pick up the behavior change, which might be why you didn't see an effect right away.

Someone once presented me with their iPhoto library to fix a small issue they were having without realising it was full of naked pics of his wife. He glanced around to see if she was near enough to notice and when she wasn't we exchanged slightly awkward, slightly amused looks and said no more about it.

That's a great opportunity to show them how to hide pictures in iPhoto (seriously).

So what does everyone think about the blurring of running and quit applications in Lion? I have yet to use Lion at all, but it seems like a feature that would really annoy me. I'm okay with it on a low-memory phone or tablet, but on a PC I'm leery.

Long ago, you had to manually allocate memory to apps too. There are things the OS should be able to do and managing memory is one. I'm OK with it.

Why? As long as it is done transparently,* it's no different from other forms of memory management. Kinda reminds me of OS 8 and 9 where you could reserve memory for apps by hand In effect, it can delay the time when you run out of memory -- which is usually a good thing.

* On my machine, there were some hiccups with Preview which wouldn't `reactivate'. But that's a Preview bug rather than a problem of the principle behind it.

I suppose. I'm very accustomed to choosing which apps are running and which are not. If the OS does an effective job so that I don't feel like resources are being dragged down because of apps the OS is choosing to continue to run (or, in the alternative, losing apps that I want to continue running), I suppose it's fine. I guess it's something I need to experience for myself.

Honestly, if it weren't for the bug and the occasional reloads of Safari pages, I wouldn't even notice.

it's not happening transparently though. Applications disappear from the Dock (feels like they crashed) and bounce when relaunched. It can be quite annoying when applications you might still want to use disappear.

I don't think the WebKit process is automatically terminated while Safari is still running. WebKit2 is simply not ready for prime time yet.

I talked with 2 IT campus representatives, and they said that they spoke with network administration and found out that, yes, IT'S A LION ISSUE. They said that they can't do anything, and that Apple needs to come out with a fix for this.

Indeed this is the case. Apple's new wireless security is incompatible with the university's redneck routers, so until Apple reimplements their normal code, or this campus upgrades from their "corporate" routers to something normal, all Lion users here are screwed.

I haven't notice that, because I hide the Dock by default. Indeed, that'd very annoying.

What happens is that you see an image of the rendered window content which is then reloaded. I interpret that as OS X restarting that particular process. Other than that, I've had no hiccups with Webkit2. What makes you say it's not ready for prime time yet?

That is probably completely under the control of Safari or WebKit. The latter might be considered part of OS X, but I'm pretty sure this is unrelated to the new process handling by the OS.

Beachballing, white page reloads, hung/unscrollable pages, "I need to reload everything to do something" errors etc. Safari is in the worst state that I can remember, just barely usable. In my opinion it was a huge mistake to push out WebKit2 without any major beta testing.

Is your Console showing a lot of spindumps/process crashes? Are you running any extensions?

Yes, it's full of spin dumps for WebProcess. Who even had the idea to create those when things are slow already to begin with?! Worst idea ever.

The only extension is Click2Flash, but currently extensions are off. It doesn't make a difference.

Well then, that right there is pretty concrete evidence that there are conditions which cause Webkit2 to freak out, and that these Webkit2/Safari bugs do exist. I've been getting the spindumps too although they seemed to have reduced in number since I fixed my Time Machine problem (I still get them from time to time though). Even if an extension was responsible, this would still be Safari's fault at least in part.

There should be nothing on a webpage which could cause a spindump. Reverting to quirks mode? Sure. Rendering problems? Sure. Bringing the process to its knees? No.

I think Lion is the best version of OS X yet but there are still some problems that cause the system busy cursor with Force Quitting the only way out. This happens to me with Safari, Xcode and a few other applications.

I think it sucks that we still have some reliability problems after 10 years but I still like OS X much, much better than any of the alternatives.

I agree with you, but Apple sucks for not making sure that one of the most used and most important apps in OS X doesn't function properly. It's retarded.

I've noticed that PhotoShop CS3 re-opens any files that were open the last time PS was started.
I don't think it had this behavior before Lion.

Things that aren't feeling good to me:

1. LaunchPad. Seems useless on a point and click device.
2. Address Book. Really? It doesn't make much sense. Might look good on an iPad but it looks absurd on a point and click device. And the design doesn't match anything else really in Lion.
3. Mail. I hate the search. Maybe I need to reindex my mailboxes and it's my problem but I can't just type and have hits come up. I have to filter now every time I search. Pain in the ass.

According to ArsTechnica, Apple is quietly starting to offer USB install sticks for people who may have a borked Lion install via the App Store download.

Are people experiencing borked Internet installs? Could that be the source of some of the reported problems?

Damn Preview in Lion is a pain in the ass! I used to be able to just overwrite a JPG and save it as a lower-sized file, and then I could close the file. Now when I go to close the file, Preview gives me two new dialogues, PER FILE, so what a pain in the ass this is going to be to edit all my photos (still need to guess at the file sizes each time before exporting). First dialogue makes no sense: Save Anyways, or Revert. I thought that I already overwrote all my changes. Then when I Save Anyways I think that Preview bloats up the file size to the high-slider-position resolution and still saves it as low quality. Then I try to close the image again, and the second dialogue comes up asking me if I really wanted to close the window. Yes, damnit! Already, geez.

And I can no longer eject my camera card until I quit preview!
I never needed to do this in 10.6, I could just eject, done. Again, done fast.

Preview is so f***ing dumb now, it's like Windows XP/etc., are you sure, are you sure...? Oh you didn't eject it. Do this first, then this, and this, then we're set to go.

Oh and I can no longer drag folders into any part of the Save As window anymore to change folder locations, I have to be very precise to drag a folder into the bar.

Still no wireless fix. Still no three-finger "top of page" / "bottom of page" trackpad option. I don't use Address Book or Mail (I don't trust them since losing all my emails/contacts since downgrading from 10.4 to 10.3) but I've heard mixed things about those as well. Another new bug is that when I'm in multicolumn Finder view, sometimes, a folder will come up as blank. This has been a bug since like 10.4 or 10.5 (can't remember), but now it also happens when changing folders via Save As, which never happened before.

Well... on the plus side, at least Mission Control and hot corners work.

I don't want to downgrade to 10.6. I want Apple to change 10.7 to the way it was.
I'm convinced that Lion sucks, just like the 10.2 to 10.3 upgrade and the even worse 10.3 to 10.4 upgrade. Why can't Apple just do a common sense, faster-workflow update like 10.5? *epic facepalm and frustration*

Here's the irony: I can't recall a new MacOS introduction where I've seen such a huge number of articles on how to revert Lion "features."

I was gonna start a thread listing all the articles on cancelling Lion's "advances" but there's too many of them...

Totally agree with you. I dragged it straight off the Dock and haven’t opened it since. After my fresh install of Lion, it rapidly became unusable icon soup as I reinstalled apps I wanted to use, and I *really* didn’t have the patience or inclination to sit dragging them into virtual folders.

If I want to launch an app fast, I either use the Dock icon if it has one, or (most often) use Spotlight.

Address Book and iCal are both totally hideous, and Apple’s skeuomorphic design has really put me off them. Thankfully, I didn’t heavily use either very often.

I haven’t had any problems with the search, but as I said, mine was a fresh install of Lion so it reindexed everything as it synced with the server.

You know what else I hate right now? Versions. Apple trying to eliminate users having to save files. Maybe it will end up being a killer feature... but.

I don't want to fan through a zillion saved copies of something, it's really hard to look at what exact version you want in that space floating window thing. It has some utility, ok, but in general, and I think I speak for others, that people operate in a different way. We work on 1 document. If we want to do a significant change, we "Save As", and then work on it as a new version. Overtime, there will be a couple of versions, but what the hell is wrong with just autosave every few minutes? Or at least an option to turn this off? All this is doing is adding complexity.

And when it decides to save, it's always at the most inopportune times, and is bloody slow. Writing... boom, freeze, saving window in the middle of the screen... at least try to work it into the background so we don't even know it's happening.

So the current implementation of Versions is a piece of bitch trash.

Cracks beginning to show at Apple without their fearless leader Steve Jobs? Maybe, just maybe, and if it's the case, I told ya'all so...

You know what? I kinda don't like Lion. I'm getting tired of desktop operating systems I think.

Going from the iPad back to my Mac is depressing... but we still need to use "trucks" for the heavy lifting, so what can you do.

I have a receipt and download code from the Apple Store for the Lion up-to-date program. My question is, Can that code be redeemed on someone else's Apple account?

And another thing: Where is tabbed Finder window browsing?

This feature has been promised since I think 10.4, and man this would make everyone's lives so much easier especially when it comes to dragging/dropping files. Instead I have to place all my windows all over the screen.

Alright I just tried iCal, and I cannot figure out for the life of me how to get more than two colors in iCal. My only choices now are green and blue???? The inspector window has no Show Colors option like in TextEdit.

"How to get more than two colors in Lion iCal?" I typed this into a search engine and found no answers to my question. I used to be able to have an infinite number of colors.

Anyone remember the convenient single inspector in Appleworks that allowed you to change colors, outlines, and gradients all within one window? Now Apple has a separate window for Fonts, another window for Colors, another for styles (outlines), and it's a mess, just like Google's stupid email service (no folders??).

Well there it is, folks. Windows: they're all over the place on your Mac.

By whom, and where?

This is the first I've heard of it, and I like to think I follow pretty closely what Apple promises, and to whom.

Apple FINALLY gives us adjustable pointer sizes.

Very sharp at any size. Nice.

Then why the h**** didn't they do the same thing to the system busy cursor and text input cursor????? Both of those are pixellated and look like crap.

Wouldn't you think whomever was assigned the task of doing this would have done ALL of the possible cursors that can be shown?

After you create and name a new calendar, get info on it and you can choose whatever colour you want.

Everyone at MacRumors! They've all been ambitious to have Finder tabs since like 2004, and I know that there were screenshots (similar to the one below, but more like taking a picture of a monitor) that actually showed Leopard having tabs.

I can't find those anymore but there are tons of OS X feature requests that have tabs in their (sarcasm-driven) forums.

All system cursor with the exception of the spinning pizza are updated to high resolution. You might see old custom cursors provided by the application itself.

There's a pretty large gulf between rumors and promises.

Ticking sound coming from a .pkg package? Don't let the .bom go off! Inspect it first with Pacifist. Macworld - five mice!
