Updating to 10.5.6 using Software Update has broken Preview. It will no longer open PDFs, JPEGS, etc. While I can use workaround programs like PDFpen, this is a major pain in the behind.

Apple Care had me go through the usual process of cleaning out Preference files, etc., but nothing worked. They suggested I do an Archive & Install of the system, but this would be a huge aggravation just to re-install a broken application.

Any ideas?

Does the app not open at all, or does it just not display certain documents ?

Does the app crash ? What's the log files say ?

The app opens ... but it fails to open docs. If I use the apple-Open command, all relevant files are greyed out. If I drag an icon into the Preview alias in the dock, it just sits there and looks dumb.

Download the 10.5.6 combo updater and install that.

If you have any full OS X install disk, you could use Pacifist to extract the original Preview application.

Not sure how you would apply any security updates selectively to this though.

You'd just run the latest combo update to get the latest patches. Otherwise, you'd be running a version of Preview that was out-of-date compared to the rest of the OS.

The Combo installer fixed the Preview problem.

However, now Mail.app is slightly broken. When doing a search, the "Entire Message" option is greyed out.

Also, try creating a new test account and see if the problem still exists. If yes, then it's systemwide. If not, then it's a problem within your account.

All is now solved. Rebuilding Mailboxes fixed the searching function in Mail.app.

Thanks to everyone for the input!
