Current iPhone 3G users have to pay the unsubsidized prices which are $200 higher. A 16 gig iPhone 3GS will cost a current iPhone 3G user $400.

Yeah, people are freaking out about this. Why? Wait until your 3G iPhone is about to bite the bullet. That's what I plan on doing. Then it won't cost much.

So how can you find out if you are in one of these so-called "HSDPA 7.2" areas or whatever?

(I'm in St. Louis, Missouri)

My contract is up in July (woohoo for original iphone), but I'll be waiting until I hear how much tethering will cost otherwise the increased speed of the iphone 3GS isn't worth it to me.

Yes, that one looks weird and amateurishly done… no class at all. The one I was talking about was the one Mike posted after my post, which sports no doubt, a more refined look.

Let's hope the ugly dark grey & purple icon is aimed to represent the QT X technology and the app itself ends getting the graphite (with a touch of blue) icon.

Purple is woefully underused in computer interfaces, I feel.

But yes, I suspect the one with the background is the icon for QuickTime the technology. It looks similar to Apple's logo for Core Image and other OS X technologies.

Does the look of the icon even matter? How often do you open up QT player?

Love your sig besson. Love more that its a tremendous violation of the rules, and love that I already did that concept right after the makeover that introduced that look.

And, oh yeah, I make my own icons because I hate ugly ones.

Bad day? A little overreaction here, down boy!

I was asking this for a number of reasons, including that it looks like Quicktime integration in the Finder and elsewhere in OS X is making the actual player application less important. I rarely launch the player myself. Has there ever been a discussion over the look of ODBC Administrator? Would you care if you didn't like the look of that icon?

Just a question, Linux is not a part of this discussion.

On the QT icon and purple...isn't purple a color usually associated with villainy ? either way i think the new icon looks cool. very HAL-ish.

The part i liked the most was the enhancements to the stacks and the dock that actually make it more usable tan what they are now. Adding those scroll bars was great imo.

FW800 in the 13" MacbookPro..... i just knew they'd pull something like this. i got one of the 13" unibody macbooks.... and they bitched about not having enough space for a FW400 port, and now they put in a FW800 and SD slot in the same form factor. that was a very cheap shot by apple imo.

The price drops were outstanding and long overdue imo...i hope they dont cut into revenues too much.

The iPhone stuff was.....mediocre... the phone is exactly the same as before. not that there's anything wrong with it...just not very exciting. they should have tried to make it smaller and lighter imo.

All in all, a good amount of content.

Cheers

You think ODBC Administrator, a program that almost nobody knows what it does in a folder people seldom visit, is comparable to the core OS media player?

Funny, I thought iTunes was the core OS media player?

(I use QuickLook myself. I'm a video editor and motion graphics artist and I rarely ever touch QT Player)

I bet if you were to survey most users you would find that the most video they watch comes from the web, so technically Safari/Firefox is the core OS media player

Purple is a color often associated with royalty. Some of those pigments back in the day were expensive and only the rich could afford...

Think of QT as the 'foundation' of media playback.... iMovie, iTunes, Safari, most cameras(i think), Finder, Mail, etc....all use the QT foundation/framework to playback content.

Err, yes. We know that. We are talking about the QuickTime Player application itself.

For the record it's actually useful now that it can record screen captures. The trim mode seems greatly enhanced for quick edits as well.

For those who weren't impressed by this keynote, watch the stream and you'll probably be won over. This was a much meatier conference than usual.

This is only true if they haven't had their 3Gs for long enough. AT&T has a built-in "equipment upgrade" timetable in the contract. If you've had your phone for long enough (whatever phone you have with AT&T), you get the same prices as new customers.

I think it was in the special features of Unbreakable, where they mention that purple n green (i think) are usually the colors associated with villains, at least in comic books.

I have no idea what you're talking about

Overall I was impressed with the WWDC keynote.

I've been using Nice Player to watch my video files for the last few years. Seems the new Quicktime player borrowed a LOT from NicePlayer. I could very well switch, I've always thought quicktime player was bloated after using Nice Player.

Yeahhhh... we were discussing the new QuickTime player icon, and it has some purple in it, so some of us started discussing the color purple and it's associations in contemporary culture.

And since Quicktime(and it's icon) are made by Apple, and they are using the color purple..... well, i hope that illustrates the relevance without going into too much detail about associations. Alternatively, you could scroll up and see how/why it was discussed it you like. hope that helps. But enough of this tangent and back to the main discussion eh ?

Neither is 'royalty' for that matter. it's not so much comic book color as it is color... red for passion, green for jealousy, etc....

We were just discussing the different meanings for purple. some see it as the color of royalty (which is justified as pointed above) while i was just saying that in i'd heard it represents villainy.

As far as relevance, im sure on some level the color of on screen elements are decided upon with these things in mind. i don't know for sure cause im not a graphics designer/arts major.

I like the new icon. Too much blue in icons now. They can bring back the purple or green notes in iTunes while they're at it.

Well, as you pointed out, purple for villiany is comic color symbolism. So that observation isn't just general color.

I feel safe they didn't decide these things based on comic book color relevance, hence my previous post...

Purple was the color of a certain type of toga called the toga praetexta.

I find it strange that Apple would design an icon based on something so obscure!

They probably want Quicktime to remind people of ancient Roman clothing so that they don't take modern day synthetic fabrics for granted. But why they chose to do this is a mystery.

Really this is all you guys have to say about WWDC?

Hmmm at work today my boss had me explain to all the sales reps everything about the new iPhone... it was purdy fun to be the most knowledgeable person in the room. And I can thank MacNN for making me this neurotic
