I'm running OSX 10.3.1 and having a problem that was non existant in Jaguar. The problem is this.
I want to keep my Desktop as clean as possible so getting rid of the hardrive icons on the desktop is what I want. Problem is if I get rid of of them I lose the cd's that are mounted also. There seems to be no compomise. I'm using the section in Finder pref under "General". I DESELECT Hard Discs and enable Cd,Dvd's ,iPods. The result is I see my 3 partitions and cd's that are mounted.

How can I make my partitions disappear without loosing the mounted cd's?
Do I need to modify a .plist file , please help this is really anoying.

I assume you see your Firewire hard drives partitions and not the internal Hard Drive. For some reason Panther does not recognize firewire hard drives as "hard drives" but as ejectable media.

You guys are right on the money. Its indeed my Firewire partitions that appear on the desktop. Can I edit a file to disable this behaviour? Any Unix help would be apreciated.

Lose -- the word is lose. ("Loose" means not firmly attached. "Loosing" is not a word at all.)

We can't help you with your problem. We didn't write the Finder. You need to go here:

Nasrudin sat on a river bank when someone shouted to him from the opposite side: "Hey! how do I get across?" "You are across!" Nasrudin shouted back.
