This is strange.
iBook g4 1.2 Ghz. On startup the screen is completly dark. You can just about see that it is displaying something but no real image. So far so failed backlight but...
If I start the machine up in target disk mode, I get an image. Not quite as bright as normal but around 50% of normal brightness. As the machine starts the screen flicks onto full brightness for a second before reverting to 50%.
I've just finished putting a new 160GB drive in the machine and it's doing this after a clean install of Leopard onto the new drive.
As said I'd normally guess a failed back light but for the fact that I can get an image using FW TD and it can't be software since it's a brand new drive and OS.
Works fine when connected to an external monitor too.
Any ideas?

It's possible that you pinched a cable when putting it back together. Why not open it back up and make sure that all cables are plugged in and routed properly?

Well it did it before I swapped the drive. I'll have a crack at reopening it over the weekend if I can't find another working solution. I hate opening up iBooks.

I agree. Check the cable.
That said, your backlight going out is also a good possibility.
