I don’t trust each of those emails to go to exactly the same freakin’ “new terms of service,” so I’ve saved each one to compare them. I got more than one for each of my different (purpose-specific) Gmail accounts. This lack of one-to-one thing is part of why I feel the need to compare them.

However, 9 to 5 Google says that the biggie is that Google says they won’t claim ownership of AI-generated output. Which sounds vaguely too altruistic for Google, so I’m suspicious.

My own irritant is people who drive 20+MPH faster than the posted freeway speed limit in a full-size pickup truck IN THE FREAKING RAIN. IN THE HOUSTON AREA. Sorry, did I raise my voice there?

Another in the long line of tech companies making the internet worse:

On any forum or site that allows Google authorized login, Chrome now shows a pop up where I can choose which Google account I want to use to log in to the site.

I did this fix a while back and it has made no difference. The pop up actually BLOCKS the site's native log in button where I'd enter my actual username and password, I have to dismiss the Google pop up every time.

Apple and Dropbox not getting along.

This almost became a major irritant yesterday. Dropbox can’t sync Logic files. Local versions are fine, so normally not a problem. We zip them for sync.

Inexplicably, a batch of local files got switched to online, effectively destroying them. Even if we wanted to shoulder the embarrassment of asking the person they’re recordings of to do it again, they’ve since moved out of state.

Thankfully, CrashPlan did its job.

Why why why why why

For how many people is the desired workflow Weather App > News About the Weather? For how many people is the workflow Weather App > The Fucking Weather Forecast?

https://discussions.apple.com/thread...By=best&page=1

Is Apple getting paid for Fox Weather click-throughs?

I thought you might chime in.

Lesson learned. Thankfully no lasting damage. Plan going forward is to shuttle them off Dropbox. To be fair, it wasn’t a problem until now. Dropbox really shouldn’t delete a local file without being asked.

Apple News notifications have long since been disabled.

I deleted the News app completely yesterday. Today the weather app is back to normal, though I don't know under which specific conditions it would choose to insert a news link in front of the weather.

Back with more Microsoft bologna.

Microsoft Teams will send periodic emails for any missed Teams content. If I don't have Teams open or pulled up and someone sends me a message, by default once per hour Teams will send me an email if there was any activity in that last hour that I missed. Useful-ish.

Except it will send me emails about content that I did NOT miss, and had even reacted to or already replied to.

Today, someone sent a messaged and @'d me. I reacted. Someone else responded to that message at 7:25. Then I replied twice in the chat at 7:29. At 8:21, I got an email from Teams about all of the activity I had missed:

Hi,
Your teammates are trying to reach you in Microsoft Teams.

Matthew mentioned you in chat with Matthew + 3
there are above average donuts in the office today since you cannot see them

Kari sent a message in chat with Kari + 3
By above average he means literally gourmet
Okay no prob, I'm optimistic, I bet there's a solution out there, so I start Googling around. HAHAHA how dumb could I be.

https://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/...7-8500952c71e9

https://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/...f-5d12d864f01f

https://www.reddit.com/r/MicrosoftTe..._emails_today/

Why do the independent advisors suck so bad? There problem is very clearly articulated but they misunderstand it and provide the wrong solution. And then the thread dies and no one has a real solution.

I need the notifications on because there might be a time when I miss something important, but I don't want junk emails on stuff I've already obviously seen.

I doubt very much josephine is a normal user "just like you." she reads like a bot.

Similar issue in apple knowledge base, searching for if there are drivers for an old iomega cd drive that will work with mac mini (I know) and the responses I've found are all: here's the knowledgebase article on why USB devices won't show up on desktop. And that article just basically says to unplug and try again.

Not actually answering the question at all.

I want to know what genius decided it was a good idea to allow websites/browsers hardware access to more or less anything imaginable.

The amount of "Chrome wants access to XXX" type of prompts is, quite honestly, tiring.

It's nice when you want to do a Teams or Zoom call without having to download the full app. I think I've blocked Chrome from requesting my location, every single freaking website seems to want it.

I think this qualifies as a “minor” irritant. I appear to have recently gotten over a sinus infection. When we were out of town at the end of April, my wife and I noticed that our allergy-related sinus issues went away. Duh, we weren’t in the San Antonio “cloud of ever changing, but ever present airborne irritants”. So when we came back and we both had sniffles, we both chalked it up to “the crap in the air”. My wife got better pretty quickly, but I kept having more than the usual stuffiness. I went through about a whole box of tissues over the course of less than a week.

Well around the beginning of last week, I noticed less gunk, less need for tissues, etc. On Tuesday, though, I had a pretty significant sneeze. (I hope anyone affected by the sudden overpressure event has recovered by now. ) And for some reason I examined the tissue I’d just sneezed into.

Fun fact: my insurance changed at the beginning of April, and I won’t be able to see my new provider until this coming Tuesday. I guess I have some stories to tell…

I feel like ive complained about this before, but Adobe killing postscript fonts is obnoxious. Can’t get Adobe Wood Type Ornaments to convert to another format.

Best I can do ATM seems to be converting individual glyphs into eps.

first they kill pantone, and now postscript?
it's like they're evil or something.

pretty sure postscript still works on older adobe apps, which since I have an old imac, I still have, if you want some wood type typesetting.

Thank you!

Luckily, for the moment, I just needed the one glyph. I was able to go FontForge > eps > Illustrator > After Effects.

What surprises me is Adobe hasn’t done their own conversion. Maybe a rights issue.

Noted, Thorzdad. I’ve had 401ks through the likes of Charles Schwab and others, and knowing they were “big names” helped me feel that my money was in good hands. This “Human Interest” firm just sounds sketchy to begin with.

My son and I read comic strips together every night. Last week they went ballistic with the ads. Previously there were no ads, or at least nothing that showed up on Safari on an iPhone. Now there's an upper banner ad that stays when you scoll the content below it, plus a lower slide-up ad that has to be manually closed at each page load, plus a video that covers the entire screen at each page load.

This is roughly life-sized on a phone screen:

I used to be able to zoom in on the comic so it was full screen in landscape mode and we could read it together. Now that most of the screen is ads, I can't zoom in on the comic without hiding some portion of it. It's unusable.

I read something about these software updates today. The big issue was that Google is doing two things: rolling out fixes for some very nasty “steal my cookie” exploits, while at the same time (finally) replacing their Manifest V2 extensions with Manifest V3. There is concern that people won’t do any updates because they think switching to V3 will mess with their ad blockers… even though that is not nearly as big a deal as someone stealing cookies that let them pretend to be you to your bank and take all your money.

I understand the reasoning - dumb users, security, etc. - IMO if we're going that route as we have been the past 5-10 years, just rip off the bandaid and make them compulsory (no opt-out/delay) and background processes. Ideally a way to update without rebooting. Remove friction, people will stop bitching.

Latest version of firefox has cookie enforcement policy, which is super strict about your logins. So logging into a vendor website worked but navigating anywhere kept asking me to log in again.

Super annoying but at least it can be shut off.

Corollary: What is with modern software update cycles? Seems most apps are updated weekly, at least on iOS, and pretty frequently elsewhere. I remember the days of a major version every 1-2 years, and point updates every few weeks/months. What benefit is there to Agile/rapid dev all the time?

I'm getting pretty annoyed with Chrome's incessant updates, especially on a shared computer as some accounts might still be logged in but running the old version of Chrome so it doesn't want to update.

Chrome's justification is that because it's based on open-source software, any bugs or exploits are out there for anyone to find, so they're public knowledge as soon as they're discovered. Any delays in patching those bugs leaves users vulnerable, so Chrome updates often and automatically.

I'm still not sure it's necessary to the extent Google (or any of the other FAANG-ers) claim.

Personally it kind of feels like software peaked in the late '00s/early '10s. We had decades of removing friction from the user, now we're going the other way with Siri suggestions, Windows 11, AI, etc. and have software actively inserting itself between the user and hardware. "Oh, we think you want to do this, we're just going to go ahead and force you to do this. Oh, that's not what you wanted?". Clippy everywhere.

I do a lot on my Debian 12 machine. I run Webmin to monitor and manage a bunch of stuff, including my internal web server. And one thing Webmin does is alert you to updates before Debian’s built in Software app does. Point? Lately there have been a LOT of updates, and many of them have been security updates. In freaking Linux!

Yeah, Chrome has had a lot of updates lately, and I think a bunch of them have been characterized as “security” as well as “new version” updates. As have a great many of the Linux-only packages that have had frequent updates…

One thing this indicates to me is that the a-hole bad guys have been working hard at raping Chrome, and also at raping Linux. I use that verb advisedly; they are not out to do nice things that everybody asks for, but rather to victimize almost everybody. So maybe these update cycles are trying to stay ahead of the bad guys.

At least updating a Mac or a Linux machine isn’t as painful as updating a Windows machine. Which reminds me: I need to turn on my Windows laptop and let it sit and update itself for a couple of days…

Speaking of which… last Thursday, uni professor couldn't get his (Windows) Audio working via HDMI. So…he restarted his machine.

Spent the next fifteen minutes telling old war stories from his days as a student while the machine force-updated the OS without any option to skip or install later.

HDMI worked fine after that.

New Outlook.

In Microsoft Word, FOREVER, when you misspell a word it underlines it, you right click the work and pick the correct spelling. Same in Google Docs. Same in Chrome. Same everywhere.

New Outlook.

Nope.

Right-click a misspelled word:

In contrast to the last two decades of user expectations, we now have to left-click the misspelled word.

Do they actually sit around and ask themselves, "What's the worst possible thing we could do?" and then they do it? I do. not. understand. how someone working in good faith could over and over and over again at every turn get everything so wrong.

Another New Outlook problem. Just like with Teams, Microsoft added a "NEW" overlay built into the new icon, which is blue. They also made the "New Mail" indicator blue, so there's almost no contrast.

The old icon (which somehow doesn't show up in a GIS) had an orange/tan envelope over the icon indicating new mail, it actually had enough contrast to catch the eye and remind me to check Outlook. Not this one. I'll switch to Outlook for something and suddenly find 14 new messages that I didn't know about.

I think that even the small possibility that “ they actually sit around and ask themselves, "What's the worst possible thing we could do?" and do it” gives these “coders” way too much credit. I think the left-click instead of right-click thing is an oops.

However given MS’s history, this oops may be redefined as “a new paradigm” and baked into more code.

I find it odd that, in an age where there are degrees in UI/UX, it seems to be worse than ever. When I was in school the closest they had was graphic design, and things seemed far more intuitive, thought out, and useful.

Tin foil hat would have me think it's enshittification, AKA intentionally bad, to somehow extract more "value" (whatever that may be).

it's all about the market a/b testing.

We've come full circle in web design where now design is separate from coding and UX so decisions about layout and function are made before even getting to design.

design exists to pick the colors that will get used in tailwind.

I’ve noticed a huge increase in the number of brick-and-mortar retailers who are now charging “convenience” fees if you use a debit/credit card for a purchase. It’s mostly small or local businesses. Even the home healthcare company my wife for charges convenience fees. Suddenly, cash is king once again.
