I wanted to see if this was a college-only phenomenon, or if anyone else was doing it...for 1/12 of your life you have an opportunity to let your face finally express itself. I currently have a nice goatee going, but not much besides that. Anyone else?

If you're only 1 year old, I doubt anyone will notice that you hadn't shaved.

Sure, I'll do no-shave November!

(Of course, for me, it's no-shave December through October, too!)

My sig is 1 pixel too big.

Ah, but if you don't shave every november, that does make up approximately 1/12th of your life.

I can't go without shaving, due to my job, but I did have a beard for about 3 weeks. It itched.

I'd shave less often if my stubble were more consistent and even.

Through a combination of a Braun electric razor and whatever triple-blade dealy I can get a tight shave with hot water and good lotion/gel. But yea, by the afternoon it's long-gone. Especially if I've been drinkin' and cursin'.

Drinking and cursing cause beards? That would explain that lady at the bar.

Electric razors are crap on my beard. I have to use a Mach 3. The new Gillette Fusion doesn't shave close for me at all either. One blade isn't enough, and five is too many.

I only shave on Sunday mornings and Wednesday evenings. I'm a youth pastor, so I have to look presentable at church. My stubble on Wednesday mornings and Fridays is barely permissable by office standards.

Holidays are an excuse to go an entire week without shaving, which is sadly almost enough for me to grow a beard. A full, bushy beard only takes about 2 weeks.

Yes, He did - an argument that I've made many times.

It's increasingly becoming less of an issue in my denomination, but the "clean-shaven" look is still kind of kosher for ministers at this point in time. Don't ask me why.

I worked at a grocery store founded in 1912 when I was in college. Let me tell you their appearance policies probably were updated every 50 years.

But to address your point more directly, I've never bought into the being clean shaven signifies you're a better person assumption. Reeks of judging a book by its cover (which assume those people would tell you not to do).

My bishop back at my old church asked me to cut my hair (which was about shoulder-length at the time, if I recall) because I was distracting the old people. I thought it was a stupid request, but I went along with it anyway.

I agree. There is actually Bible for a man's hair being short (1 Cor. 11:14), but the facial hair thing is kind of ridiculous, IMO.

Let me clarify that many of the men in our churches have facial hair (and some with long hair). It's just for the ministers that it applies to.

I think the point is to remain respectable within your culture. The problem with saying 'It's okay to grow a beard' is where do you draw the line? A foot long beard on a pastor would be kind of distracting, I think, not to mention a lot of people would think he's some sort of hobo.
A pastor at a Methodist church I used to go to had a well trimmed beard, and there was nothing wrong with it.

The OTHER dorm up stairs has a Hairy Till January thing going from October till January. It's pretty dang gross. I have a lil "soul patch" but other than that, you really gotta be able to pull off the facial hair... and most guys can't.

Short compared to a woman's hair. Which really wasn't supposed to be cut.

Men wore their hair long to our standards.

My denomination's women don't cut their hair; or are at least taught not to cut it. Many of them cut it anyways.

I'm not being a smart aleck, but what makes you think men wore their hair long during Jesus' time? I've read that most men kept their hair very short during those times. I'm open to discussion though.

And as for Jesus' appeance: there are no specific details given concerning Jesus' appearance besides the mention of his beard (being plucked from his face).

From Wikipedia...

Recently, a team of forensic scientists from the UK and Israel attempted to construct what Jesus may have looked like. Starting with a skull from that time period, they reconstructed the face.
Critics point out that this method only produces an image of a (perhaps typical) Jew from the first century, and does not say anything more about what Jesus looks like than a photo of one modern man tells you what another specific modern man looks like.
However, the project was never intended to determine exactly what Jesus looked like; it was designed only to provide an image that would be closer to what Jesus looked like than modern depictions are.

My first ten days of Movember. Day one clean shaven in the first picture, through to day ten today in the last picture.

It's gettin' there.

i saw that show on tlc, history or science channel or whatever...

anyways, so most if not all of the art depicting jesus are off target? and if so, who don't we ever see a crucifix of jesus with short hair in churches or their own depiction of him?

i'm just asking mostly from an artist point of view...where did all the great ones get their references?

I'm assuming mostly tradition. How many people have the long hair long beard image? It's what people think of, so that's how people draw it. The Bible does hint that he wasn't necessarily attractive, IIRC.
