I don't know what it is about this song, but it makes me feel so patriotic...even though I'm not! I just want to stand up, and shout, "America! America!"
It's a pretty good song . I'm debating over whether or not I should buy it. It might not fit with The Goo Goo Dolls, Vertical Horizon, Evanescence, and Dido (I have very feminine taste)...
Does anyone else really like this song? I'm sure a lot of people hate it...
Edit: Eek! The same song is on 10 different albums. I don't know which one to buy!

And if you want a great movie to complement that song, you gotta watch the first Delta Force with Lee Marvin and Chuck Norris! It charges me up all the time!

"God Bless America" is a great song. The best rendition is by Kate Smith.

I'm an American and I'm not a fan of that song. Not everyone is taken in by that ultrapatriotic sap. And I'm not too keen on the "God" part either.

You can pretty much bet anyone that doesn't like the song is either
1. Liberal
2. Atheist.
I've never met a religious person, or a conservative that didn't like it.

Well, it can be overplayed. I like it every once in a while, but too much patriotic fervor always gives me the willies instead of chills down my back.

There is a difference between hating the song totally. And not liking it played all the time.
Right? Right.
I dislike over-patriotic pretentiousness as well.
But if I hear that song once in awhile, It doesn't make me ill, or mad.

Of course not. Someone who puts down the song, though, is less likely to be American.
I'm not too patriotic, myself...I just like the melody . It makes me feel like I'm patriotic.

My favorite is the pickup truck with the American flag sticker/decal thing covering the rear window.

But you don't have a problem spending American money? Even though that horrible horrible word "God" is printed on it?

I seriously don't understand all this "patriotism"-crap. I really don't. I wish someone would explain it to me someday though. It must be that "us vs. them"-thing that I never got about sports as well.

No, just asking a basic question. People don't like "hearing" the word God, and don't like God being spoken in public or anything because it "offends" them, but it's okay for people to "see" the word God on money when they spend it. Kind of seems like a double standard, they "tolerate" the word God when it benefits them...

I'd rather it not be on money, and its presence doesn't benefit me--the money itself benefits me. If people only accepted money because it has the word "God" on it, then I would benefit in the way you described.
I can't speak for other atheists, but I don't care if people mention God in public. What I don't like is evangelism, or mentions of God in governmental proceedings. Religion has no place in our government. And I think you're making a big deal out of nothing with the money thing--we have bigger "God" fish to fry; money can wait. Now if it was Jesus's picture instead of a president's... then I think people would be upset.

Well, I'm glad there is God in our government. I'm glad they say a prayer to God instead of hanging a flag with a swastika on it.

Not to mention the "proper" (ie. original) usage of the Swastika - that is, as a symbol of deities representing the sun.
His Dudeness seems to be on a xenophobic roll today that has cost him the ability to see any colour in the spectrum that is not either black or white.

That is absolutely ridiculous. If you want to have an actual conversation about this, please refrain from comparing atheism to Naziism. We have done nothing wrong; all we want is tolerance and a religiously-unbiased government.

I'm just being argumentative. This country was founded on freedom of religion. Just because the minority don't like it, doesn't mean that religion has to go away.

That's a good point, and also a disturbing one. I don't think there is any place in civilized society for a group that considers one to be "bad" merely by virtue of not being a part of it.

No one is saying that all religion has to "go away." I'm saying that there should be a separation of church and state.
Here's an example: If you want to have the 10 commandments in a public place, then in the interests of fairness that, as you say, this country was founded on, you should also put up an equivalent set of rules for every religion. Is that feasible? No. Even if you tried, you'd be leaving out some, or some would be more prominent than others. The only solution is to keep government religiously-neutral. That is what I, and many other atheists want.

I know what the swastika was before Adolf ruined it. As a child on his way to school everyday, he passed some sort of church with that symbol on it. That's where he got it from.

Noy suh! I just can't take myself seriously when I hear it. We may be overstating the bounds of who accepts it, but nonetheless, those of non-devoted religious principles, with a higher education are less likely to enjoy this 60 cent production garbage.

I agree largely with what you're saying here. I do think separation of church and state is vitally important. The question is: Can government ever properly acknowledge God without violating this principle, and if so, how?
