Microsoft has sent an email to affected users of its OneDrive cloud storage service that it will be reducing their free storage from 15GB to 5GB. The latest change to OneDrive free storage allocations affects OneDrive subscribers who did not get bonus space through subscribing to Office 365. All new users who sign up to OneDrive have been capped a 5GB of free storage since the initial policy change was announced late last year, which is in line with the free allocation Apple offers iCloud users. Office 365 subscribers are not affected by the change in policy.

OneDrive-only users who want additional storage space have the option of a 50GB tier, priced at $2 per month -- $1 per month more than Apple charges for the same amount of iCloud space. Users who subscribe to Office 365, however, are allocated 1TB of storage space, with the subscription plans starting from $7 per month. Apple charges users $10 per month for 1TB, but does include any additional special features.

Microsoft had previously attempted to implement this change last year, but backtracked after some initial complaints, allowing those who signed up at a special site for a limited time to keep their camera bonus (15GB) and original 15GB space. These users continue to enjoy this arrangement, however, those who were on the free 15GB allocation, but did not opt in for the grandfathered extra storage offer, will now see their allotment reduced to 5GB on August 10, as previously advised.

Microsoft had previously also offered unlimited storage plans to OneDrive customers, however removed this as an option after the deal was, in Microsoft's view, "abused by some customers." In at least one instance, a customer had stored over 75TB of data on their OneDrive account.

Welcome to the Dump and Drop Club, Microsoft. Take your seat next to Goggle. You've joined the select group of those in high-tech who can't be trusted to retain products, services or offers. Cutting 15 GB to 5 GB, a 300% decrease, means you're acquired a Silver membership. Dropping the OneDrive service altogether would have won you the coveted Gold membership much like Google.

Not sure what Inkling is talking about in regards to google. Especially when it comes to Google drive. Think you need to do your homework...

All the big software companies are poor when it comes to cloud storage. Apple, Microsoft, Google, etc. All with poor pricing per month and limited "free" offerings.

I suggest 3rd party companies or even free cloud servers with appropriate security, sharing and bandwidth for your needs. For example, Mega provides 50GB for free.

Good luck one-stop shopping in the tech world. No one offers a well rounded solution for all your tech needs.

Would a 300% decrease imply that users will have "minus 30 GB" of free space?

$0.99 per month for 50GB of storage is "poor pricing?"

DCQ: yeah, I didn't understand that bit either. But then I'm surprised to hear that Mega is still in business.

@Inkling Kind of like Apple, right? Dropped services like free email for life, mobile.me, etc etc etc? And I realize math is hard, but come on, 300%? Sheesh.
