i have a 6100/66, 72MB RAM, OS9.1.
recently put an Qantum Atlas IV 36GB drive in place of the cd-rom drive. the Atlas IV is ultra wide, but i've also purchased an SCA adapter to convert the pin connectors so everything connects.
problem is i'm getting volume errors on this new drive, and i can't seem to format it using apple's HD setup - it hangs.

any suggestions? (i'm going to try APS PowerTools to try and format it later this week).

Have you partitioned the drive? I was under the impression that these older machines can not accept/use a partition bigger than 2GB. You can have any size hard drive just not a big partition.

Have you tried to startup from the CD and then partition the drive?

actually i was trying to use the 36GB as one partition, so thanks for the possible solution! though 2GB sounds kinda low, i thought i had a 4GB in there at one point as one partition? 18 partitions is not what i wanted.

The 6100 had no limitations on partition size. SCSI places no limitations on partition size. Sometimes, though, an OS can put limits on partition size, but I don't think the Mac OS ever did. I also run 9.0 on a 6100.

My bet is that you have a termination problem. How many drives do you have in the machine now? 1 or 2?

If you have 2 drives, then your 36 GB drive is probably on the former CD-ROM connector. Sometimes the SCA adapters have termination on them, or sometimes the newer larger hard drives have jumpers on them to enable termination. You would want to make sure that the large drive in this case has no termination--not on the adapter, nor on the drive. Only the small hard drive in the normal spot at the end of the ribbon cable needs to be terminated.

If you just have the one large drive, it must be terminated. In addition to the termination, try plugging it into the connector at the end of the ribbon cable. Just leave the old CD-ROM connector empty.

P.S. I just upgraded from my 6100 to a 7600. The machine only cost $65 on eBay and it's a giant leap up from the 6100. You can move your new hard drive straight over. But your memory won't transfer.

If i remember correctly OS 7.0 has a 2GB max and HFS which 8.5 and older only support has a 4GB max. you need to be running 8.6 or newer and format it HFS+ to get it all. I could be wrong so feel free to correct me. You may also need to use 3rd party software to format it if DriveSetup won't do it.

Minimum OS for HFS+ is 8.1. My 8100 runs 8.1 with a 1 GB HD formatted in HFS+ with Drive SetUp.

Don't be surprised about Drive Setup not working with your drive. Your drive is not OEM Apple, so drive setup will not do a thing with it. You must use a third party utility with a third party drive. I'm familiar with and fond of FWB Hard Disk Toolkit. Yes, you will have to buy it.

Some Mac models do have a drive size limitations based on their ROM. I don't believe that a 6100 will have any significant drive size limitation, when combined with any relatively recent OS version. 8.6 would be the best version to run on your machine from a stability standpoint.
