I'll be traveling to Costa Rica soon, and my cell phone is a tracfone. I called them to ask how much it would cost to use it there, and they said no more than usual. Can this be true? Has anyone ever used a tracfone while on an international trip?

That seems to be about calling other countries from the US. Nothing I've found talks about physically taking your phone to another country and making calls from there.

Hmmm, sorry. Now I guess it seems like it's a nation-wide thing. I have a Tracfone for emergencies (that I coincidentally have to buy more time for right now), and now that I think of it I remember that they are SIM card based. I'd assume you'd need a different SIM card for international calling, but call customer service I suppose.

Well I called the same number and asked the same question... this time they said that there will be a roaming charge and on top of that they'll disconnect the phone shortly after if I try to make calls from there. She didn't sound very sure about this... but I'm not going to try it out.

Sorry about that. I've been trying for the last couple of hours to buy more minutes online, but their server is screwed. Annoying experiences for both of us.

My impression of Tracfone over the years is that it's fantastic as long as you don't need it
