Flarestorm 1.x was fairly compatible...but it was slow. Flarestorm 2.0 was not very compatible...but it was faster.

PCSX, however, will be very compatible *and* fast.

Yes, folks, the man that brought to you MacTrueReality and ViBE is back...and he's back with a vengeance.

Gil will be releasing sometime before the end of the year a Mac port of PCSX. Yes, that means you can remove that Mac OS 9 partition on your HD. Yes, it means you can kick CVGS to the curb. And yes, you will be wasting precious time once again.

Dust off your Playstation CDs...the wait for a good PSX emulator is almost over.

sweet! I can't wait... I never had much success with flarestorm.

Is there any info about this project? Got a link?

I'd really rather not mess around with finding BIOS for playstation and whatnot... CVGS just worked... I liked that, and I hope this new project puts CVGS to shame I know nothing about it, but your post had enough energy to get my hopes up. Don't disappoint me...

Not a whole lot more...except that it would be released soon (as a public beta?)

Also, it will read CVGS memory cards as well as other popular mem card formats on the web.

Ooh, I forgot Metal Gear Solid... And Heart of Darkness... And Ape Escape (though I'd probably need to hook up an actual PSX controller with one of those USB boxes for that)... This is gonna be great.

This reminds me, though... A few days ago, I stumbled across an emulation news site in French on Google (the URL escapes me right now, sorry X_x;; ), where it was stated that the PCSX port was due to be released some time around late August. Since late August has just gone, I would imagine the release can't be too far off.

That's the assumption I'm making also...but let's just say "before the year's end" so nobody's disappointed.

Any news on this? The only things I've found were a forum post from back in April saying it "might" happen... the post turned into a Mac vs PC flamewar about 1/3 the way through... and a French site also from April stating it might happen, too.

The official PCSX site has nothing about it.

I mostly want to know why we should be expecting it soon.

Well, on Windows, Saturn emulators are only just getting to the point where they run commercial games acceptably (something PSX emulation had as long as five years ago), so I'm not holding out any hopes for that for a while. As far as Sega CD and 32X go, though, I heard some chatter a little while back that somebody was porting Gens (an open-source Genesis/Sega CD/32X emu) to Mac OS X. Nothing seems to have come of it yet, though, so I was never able to verify it (it might just have been a rumour).

More on-topic, any word on the release of PCSX for OS X, yet?

Gil Pederson says his iBook had problems and was sent for repair at Apple...so no PCSX for a little while.

Wonder how hard it would be to implement a Gamecube emulator, seeing is the architecture is fairly similar with the processor and graphics card.

Other than them both having a processor and graphics "card", the N64 and Gamecube architectures aren't really similar at all:

N64 CPU: MIPS 4300-variant
GC CPU: PPC G3 variant +vector unit

N64 memory system: 4 meg unified RDRAM
GC memory system: 24 meg 1T-SRAM + 16 meg DRAM + 3 meg video 1T-SRAM

N64 GPU: SGI designed "RCP", microcode
GC GPU: ATI designed "Flipper"

N64: SPU: none, must be handled by RCP
GC SPU: embedded DSP in Flipper

These are very different consoles. But that doesn't stop anyone from making gamecube emulators:

I'm not too sure where the N64 even comes into it - I think the previous post was probably talking about the fact that the GameCube uses a PPC processor and an ATi graphics card, like several kinds of Mac do (or, how hard would it be to implement a GC emu for Macintosh)...

awesome to be able to play them again.

You can check the thread http://forums.emuscene.com/viewtopic.php?t=17 for updates. It's one of those things, when it's done, it's done. Last I heard, hope to release in December or so.

It uses a PowerPC with some extensions.

The graphics chip wasn't designed by ATI, but by a company that ATI purchased after Nintendo had selected the chip, so that ATI could have their name associated with a console, like Nvidia did with the XBox.

In terms of the architecture of the chip, it's not like anything else ATI has.

OOh, looks like he's devloping on a G5 now, too. I remember playing playstation on my Blue and White G3 back in 1999... It ran so well and was so compatible, amazing for something that was 5 years ago.

I'm looking forward to this. In the mean time I'll just play Street Fighter 2 on my SNES.

Actually that's Richard Bannister's (of RockNES, Genesis Plus and Audio Overload fame) who is helping test it for Gil. As far as I know Gil is still doing his work on an iBook G4.

Ok, this thing works ...

Just tried Medal of Honor, Metal Gear SOlid and played Knockout Kings 2000 the whole afternoon.
Really grateful for this, we can finally play all those low-demanding PSX games

Saving/Loading is a bit flakey though

I was playing granturismo on my pismo years ago in OS9 using the connectix program, I believe it was called.

OK, maybe I should have started with a simple game, but hey, we're here as Beta Testers on this, right?

So I loaded up Gran Turismo 2, bought myself a car, drove Tahiti Road in the Sunday Cup, hit a barrier a bit too hard, and went barreling up and down the track, sometimes flying in the air, hitting the other cars as they came around and making them do the same thing. Then when it eventually stopped, I started driving the car again as normal, Nissan Micra flying overhead (???!!!???) and I noticed that my revcounter works perfectly, but the speedometer flickers between 1 and 2 kmh. All in all, the funniest 5 minutes I've had in ages. If you've got this and GT2, load it up, drive around and hit a barrier at a fair speed (the race menu chokes on the transparency and glowing graphics though, so that takes a while to get past, just keep holding down the buttons). I tried to take a screenshot, but that didn't work.

Oh and I do have a PS2 so I don't really need this, I just wanted to get the old days back from before I had the PS2, booting into OS 9 and loading VGS.

So which games are 'simple' enough for this?

It'll be much easier if you just comply.

some people don't have a pismo to boot into os9. buy a new mac and no os9, therefore no vgs.

this is awesome since it allows what vgs did, but now for osX

I had enough time to try out six games with PCSX today;

Rockman 8
Mega Man X4
Croc: Legend of the Gobbos
Croc 2
Klonoa - Door to Phantomile
MegaMan Legends 2

Three of them (Rockman 8, Mega Man X4, and Klonoa - Door to Phantomile) worked. However, there were small issues, such as the movies in Rockman 8 not being played (the game runs absolutely perfectly aside from this, however), Mega Man X4's movies being skipped also, and it's music not being played correctly (the intro's for each track just kept looping and stuttering over and over, almost like 'drumming' - it was very annoying), and the voices in Klonoa permanently having an echo effect that they shouldn't (additionally, part of the opening movie after starting a new game stuttered for a second or so, and background noises do not stop when you pause the game, which they actually should). All were perfectly playable, and seemed to have no problems with saving and loading, although some might consider the audio issue with Mega Man X4 to be annoying enough that they might want to turn the XA music off in the emulator's Preferences pane until a later release fixes this problem.
Of all these titles, I would have to say that Rockman 8 and Klonoa ran the best. X4 ran just as well, but that music problem irritated me fairly quickly. XD

As for the games which didn't work, all but one of them actually did something before becoming unplayable.
Croc: Legend of the Gobbos was the first game I tried where movies (actual movies, not real-time game-graphics cutscenes) worked. It spazzed out upon trying to play the real-time intro cutscene, and decided to skip over it after a split second of plain blue with an overlay of skewed and messed-up polygons. The title screen loaded ok, but the music became stuttery almost immediately (like the Mega Man X4 music issue), and the same goes for the map-screen when starting a new game. However, when I tried to load the first level, the loading screen (which normally shows Croc on a black background, walking to roughly the centre of the screen before fading out) ground to a half within about one or two seconds. After waiting for a few minutes, and seeing Croc move about one frame every seven to ten seconds (which coincided with disc-access noises), I quit the emulator and gave up. This doesn't really count as playable in my book.
Croc 2 didn't even get to opening the first intro movie (the Fox Interactive logo), and started stuttering and making a fair bit of annoying noise, very much like the music issue with Mega Man X4. Obviously not even workable at this point.
MegaMan Legends 2 displayed the Capcom logo, but then went to a black screen (normally where the loading for the bootup cutscene would occur), and just did nothing but make occasional disc-access noises every seven to ten seconds. This was very much like what happened with Croc 1, so I assume it's an issue with how certain games are loaded. As with the other two non-working games I tried, I would imagine this will be fixed in a future release.

In short, I'm very impressed - there weren't that many issues at all, and I expected a lot more. It all runs very nicely, and I look forward to the future of this emulator.

Oh, and here are some screenshots;
Rockman 8;
Rockman 8 - Metal Heroes title screen
Rockman kicking a Mega Ball at the intro stage boss
Talking to Dr. Right

Mega Man X4;
Mega Man X4 title screen
Character Select screen
AIEE! Big Maverick! Run Zero, you girly-freak! Run!!

Klonoa - Door to Phantomile;
Klonoa - Door to Phantomile title screen
Out in the rain
Fighting Rongo Lango

Pardon the somewhat poor cropping - I couldn't get Grab to take snapshots of the window (they all came out with the windows contents black), so I had to use Cmd+Shift+3 instead. ^^;;

I'm glad to hear some people are finding joy. My two favorite games, "The Italian Job" and "Need for Speed V-Rally", both hang (actually, V-Rally doesn't even load). The problem is probably hardware speed as "Gran Turismo 2" does run, but it's somewhat slow.

I have a 900Mhz iBook G3. The site says 800Mhz or higher, but I suppose that's for G4s (it doesn't specify). Oh well, looks like I'll have to hang on to classic and CVGS.

Cheers!

Oh, what BIOS is everyone using? I tried with both SCPH 1001 and SCPH 7001 and didn't notice a difference.

That's an OS bug. It affects anything using OpenGL.
