Why isn't macnn as picky with their ads as they are with sigs and imgs?

I wonder.. granted I haven't seen one of the worst ads in a while, why the MacNN mods are SOOOO utterly stringent and anal when it comes to sigs, even getting mad at people for going over size limits, yet sometimes the ad banners are some of the worst on the internet:
They're about 700 pix wide, sometimes animated, not unusually big, and sometimes have seizure inducing animation on them. So tell me, if we pay you 3 cents a view does that mean we can have vomit inducing 700px wide sigs too?
edit: I don't want people getting the wrong ideas -- yes it's perfectly fine that MacNN gets their support that way, in fact I'd be fine with even worse banners, or double banners (one at top and one at bottom), but it sounds kinda ironic. *shrug* that is all.

Oh come now, it was a useful question to ask with maniacs like tooki running around
I mean heck he has mushrooms in his name.. uh yeah.
I can't believe you people bash me. Some of the stuff discussed here is utter crap and perverted, I have clean humor so thus nobody likes it.

I'd say they are all just as picky with the ads. If you see one that is particularly horrendous (meaning, they don't even advertise something, they just flash stuff and say "click here"), then bring it to an admin's attention, and it will get taken out of the loop.
That's why you haven't seen one in a while.

I'd rather pay 3 cents a view for javascript in my signature. That'd be a fun ride...

Picky about the sigs and inline images? Just wait until they get picky about the users. We'll all have to submit self evaluations and attend an interview to prove our worth.
Damn, I hope I haven't given them an idea...

I was thinking about this thread and realized, I don't see the ads anymore.
They just go right to my subconscious and I am these weird desires to spend money on stuff I don't need..

Also, the reason for the strict image guidelines are that inline images are inside the tables that format the page, so a 700px image balloons the tables to over 900px, which is way too wide. Ads are outside the tables, so they can be wider without distorting the page.
As for signatures... we want the content to stand out, not your signature. Additionally, there is one ad per page. There can be dozens of signatures on a page, which easily add up in size if they're big, which would cause a problem for modem users (which still comprise 1/2 the internet users in this country, and more than half in many others).

And then some prankster would put 30 billion alerts in his sig, and no one would be able to view any pages.

I remember having an argument with someone around here (Voodoo?) who claimed unequivocally that "56k is dead." What bllsht. I'm glad the people in charge here are more grounded in reality.

Yup, you're right
Although millions of U.S. Internet users have switched from dial-up service to high-speed access, millions more are resisting the change.
...
Internet service providers are discovering there is a large core of dial-up users who continue to resist switching to the faster broadband service, the New York Times reported Monday.
