Yeah, they said that the new G5's could be announced yesterday. I wouldn't be surprised if that's what it was.

It seems like this is what's going to happen (saw it on another site)...
Dual 1.8 powermac, geforce 5200, 256 ram
dual 2.0 powermac, radeon 9600, 512 ram
dual 2.5 powermac, radeon 9600xt, 512 ram.
Not all that exciting, the real suckage is new video cards JUST came out from nvidia and ati and they're not even talking about them. DAMN!

So after a year we got a measley speedbump, a video card that's HARDLY faster and the slightly bumped chips run so hot they need water cooling? The PC trolls are going to be ALL OVER this one.
Water cooled g5s. Sheesh. Those fans better be able to go off when idle now

The more I think of this, the more happy I am I bought my Dual 1.8 when I did with PCI-X etc...
Anyone know the last time there was a Powermac update when the top of the line didn't become the Bottom of the line? Not in the is case the middle, being hamstrung and being made the bottom of the line?

A much-needed update, and all you can do is complain. Figures.
The water-cooling is a good idea since it will keep the noise down.
I do believe a new machine will be coming by way soon now!

Well, the dual 1.8 now has the added features of:
4 Gig RAM maximum.
No PCI-X.
256Mb RAM as Standard.
A 80 Gig HAD instead of 160 Gig.
... basically a 1.6 G5 board with another processor.
The Dual 2 Ghz has a worse graphics card than the previous generation...!
This is an update that should have been made 4 months ago. I mean, 256MB as standard on a 'Pro' machine?!?!
The only saving grace is the 2.5 G5 with watercooling...

I sure am glad I bought my Dual 1.8 last November. It's now the red-haired step child. Does come with an 8X Super drive though. And seeing as how the mid-range is only the 2.0, I feel even better now!

We're supposed to be at 3.0 right now. That was the statement made last year, right?

Or the end of the summer
I'm still waiting for that 3.0GHz machine.

I thought Steve said "by the end of next year", in regards to 3GHz machines?

Crap, didn't read the specs close enough! Time to see if my boss' wife can get me a deal on a new 2x2.0 (she works for Apple Canada)

i think the dual 2.0 should be the low end, priced at 1,999, the dual 2.5 ghz at 2,499, and a special edition 2.5 ghz with 1 gig ram and all the bells and whistles at 2,999.

I would have liked to have seen a 2 Ghz, 2.2ghz, and a 2.5 ghz.
All without 5200 Ultra Gfx cards... The 9600XT is hardly expensive these days.

It looks like we won't see a 3.0GHz anytime soon (my emphasis):
"It's actually quite simple," said Boger [Tom Boger, Apple's Director of Power Mac Product Marketing]. "When we made that prediction, we just didn't realize the challenges moving to 90 nanometer would present. It turned out to be a much bigger challenge than anyone expected."
"All-in-all, no we are not getting to 3GHz anytime soon, but what we are announcing today is a very significant upgrade in performance and its something that are customers will be very happy with."

I'm not disappointed regarding the lack of a 3GHz chip (dual 2.5 GHz should be pretty competitive for a few months) but man, they took the cheap road with video cards. Radeon 9600 in the high end? And those crummy GeForce cards in the others?
I'm still trying to figure out why all this cooling is necessary. It doesn't look like the 2.5GHz G5 chips run all THAT hot. Maybe Apple just wants to keep the cooling as quiet as possible, or perhaps they are simply preparing an enclosure that they'll be able to use for several processor revisions into the future.
