So I finally realized what it is by accident, when chatting with a friend in adium..

Hold down option + shift, hit enter, you get a box. It looks like this:

Apple so needs to fix that.

No, it's a bug in the keyboard driver or something, because pretty much all mac things do it

The box is what is displayed when a font doesn't contain a glyph for that character. It's the placeholder. Option-Shift-Enter is a valid character.

Some apps will filter out characters that make no sense in context.

At least it's better than MS Word v.X AND 2004 where just pressing the little 'enter' displays a box! Excel treats it correctly but Word is just silly!

How is this a bug? You entered a character, it's displaying the glyph for that character (in this case, the "glyph not found" glyph). Just like entering shift-option-K produces an Apple symbol. What alternate behavior would you suggest?

Hey let's blame Apple for a font issue! At least they didn't have a swastika in their font character.

That's not a swastika, if it was it would be rotated another 45 degrees.

That's the character that caused Microsoft the trouble. Looks like a swastika to me. It doesn't matter how it's oriented.

A swastika is a swastika, no matter what degree of rotation, and no matter whether it's facing left or right. The Nazi swastika did specify those two aspects, but the swastika is an ancient symbol that had been used for centuries (including by peaceful religious groups) before the Nazis sullied it.

In fact, if you look at the maps of many cities in Japan, you'll find them dotted with swastikas it's the common symbol for a temple.

Incidentally, I just noticed: In Firefox, that doesn't display as a box. It's a left-pointing arrow (looks like the copy-editing symbol for "don't indent"). Interesting.

And in epiphany (the gecko based browser that comes with Gnome) it shows up as a rectangular box with 4 numbers in it...

Note that if you enter shift-option-K for the Apple symbol, and then switch to a different font that doesn't have a character mapped there (most fonts do not include an Apple symbol), it will turn to - a box!

I just inherited some antique Japanese furniture, one of the pieces being a large chest. There's swastikas all over it.

It was weird the first ten minutes I had it sitting in the bedroom.

Wasn't the problem that it was MS that was retarded for _not_ havinga Swastika amongst their fonts in some touching attempt at political correctness?

I too am intrigued by your reference, Zimphire. I've never seen the swastika used in a Jewish context.

When first built at the beginning of the 3rd century, it was a modest, trapezoidal structure. In its northern wall, facing Jerusalem, were two openings. The floor was of simple white mosaic with a swastika pattern in black tesserae in the center. This pattern has been interpreted as a decorative motif or as a good luck symbol.

Great, I was wrong, looking back on it, the characters that came from shift + option + backspace were different than the ones that came from the bug itself.

So, we're back to square one. I can say the bug exists because it seems to come up a LOT.

Note that I documented it here too

http://forums.macnn.com/showthread.p...=keyboard+10.3

It has to do with doing shift + up + backspace somehow, I'm not sure how or why, but it happens.
