Hi guys!

I'm sorry if this was discussed earlier, but I wasn't able to find any answers if every.

Is it possible to overclock a G4 400 SawTooth to a 450 one? Is it as easy as with the previous G3 motherboards? Or does it require soldering?

Also, do the new SawTooth motherboards sport a 100 MHz system bus?

Your sawtooth machine has a 100 mhz system bus, yes indeed.

Don't know about overclocking sawtooth. I've been given to understand that it is difficult if not impossible, but what do I know? I'd love to go 450 from 400.

What do you say, experts? Sooner or later there will be CPU upgrades for these machines, but it would be interesting to know what we could do now. Once my warranty is up I'll consider the options.

Well then again... if you have a Yikes! G4 (non AGP, 350mhz ones i think), it is jumper based, therefore you may play with the jumpers and overclock it. If not, you must figure out how to de/soldier the thing risking the whole computer for a mere 50mhz increase on an already superior computer. Or, if you want to spend money, spend it on a G4 upgrade (yeah right)

Go from a 450 to 400? Undeclocking? Hehehe. Why so?

Anyway, I har it requires soldering and a lot of care. Nahhh... Maybe I'll wait.

The PowerLogix cache control program allows you to play around with your backside cache speed and I've gotten some performance enhancement out of it on my Sawtooth G4/400. Maybe try that to get a little more speed. I've written about it elsewhere but I did manage to beat my best Seti @ Home time by close to 20 minutes by using it.

Is the program freely available?

Yes, at their website. However, I've found that in certain instances some of my SETI processing has been slower than normal and I'm not entirely sure why. I'm going to watch this very carefully.

ive tried both the xlr8 mach software and powerlogix. but i dont think they make a difference. doesnt the cache of the g4 run @ half the processor speed anyway?

Why don't L2 caches run at processor speed?

Notice how you moved the from and gave it a completely different meaning than intended?

It is not impossible to overclock a Sawtooth machine, just very difficult for even the most experience solderer (is that even a word :-) ).

If you feel like ruining your new mac you can get diagram for the resistors and such here: <http://www.xlr8yourmac.com/G4ZONE/sawtooth/SawtoothCPUdesign.html>

I do not recommend this and do not take any responsibilty for anyone doing any sort of damage.
