I just ordered one from amazon. I have a Dell monitor with vga, hdmi and dvi. I already own a hdmi cable, don't have dvi and the monitor came with a vga cable. Is the hdmi going to be the best connection? also will that mess up the sound since my monitor has no sound and I'll be using external speakers plugged into the mini.

No, just select your sound output in System Preferences. HDMI should have no issue.
