You didn't read that in the force quit window, did you? That would have been too easy.

Incidentally, anybody have any idea why Apple didn't list it as a proper keyboard shortcut? I hadn't noticed that before....

It's documented in the help. This is one of those legacy things that has been around in MacOS for 15 years.

Look up "shortcuts for freezes".

It is documented RIGHT IN THE APPLE MENU.

Just look at the menu-- the keyboard shortcut is RIGHT THERE.

This has got to be one of the most-documented keyboard commands: it's in the Apple menu, it's in help, and it's right on the window once activated.

For the longest time I thought Apple had deactivated this shortcut in an OS X update... but then I realized my option key just didn't work.

True story!

What a way to find out! You mean you never use the option key in Photoshop, or for copying files, accent/special characters or hiding multiple apps?

Add SHIFT to that combination to automatically force-quit the active application.

I don't use Photoshop that much I guess, for some reason I always use the other option key for copying files, and I've got a mouse button set for hiding multiple apps. Now if only I knew why my left option key broke, must've been the elves.

the first 2 are printed on the damn keyboard, and the second is kinda obvious. anyway, when you select that option from the menu - using your mouse - the Force quit window opens, and it says in plain English which keys to use. you'd have to be blind not to see.

Actually, the U.S. keyboard has neither the Option nor Escape symbols printed on the keyboard -- they're labelled as "option" and "esc".

(Same for the control key, labeled "ctrl". Its symbol in menus is .)

You have no idea what the other symbols on your keyboard mean (A, B, C...) the first time you see them, either. But you learn them! It's called education.

Not before Panther, I don't think. The Jag computer I use at work doesn't list the shortcut. I thought that was odd.

while i agree that you have to be pretty dumb to not see it in the dialogue box, but my keyboard doesnt have the symbol for "option" or "esc." so it would be pretty hard to figure out what those keys meant by looking just at the keyboard.

It's always so important here to belittle anyone who isn't familiar with the Mac. So the **** what if someone doesn't know the combo for the Force Quit function. Help him/her out, and move the **** along. Holy ****.

Fantastic then. This message brought to you by a drunk and somewhat annoyed xi_hyperon.

Ok, on popular request (xi_hyperon), here a more constructive criticism:

If your brain is weak, JUST MAKE A F****** print-out of what the symbols mean. Or for Pete's sake, jot them down.

Gosh....

Well, actually the question is to force-quit a window, instead of an applictaion. I don't know how to do that, except for command-w.

That's impossible. Windows don't have their own processes.

What the nerd community most often fail to realize is that all features aren't equal. A well implemented and well integrated feature in a convenient interface is worth way more than the same feature implemented crappy, or accessed through a annoying interface.

Hmmm... in windows you actually can run each window as a separate process... I'd be surprised if you could not find a way to do it in OS X.

Windows (the operating system) has a lot of very skewed concepts about the windows (the GUI element) metaphor. No news there. Force quitting a window doesn't really make much sense.

What for ?
It would suck to have dozens of symbols clutter your dock, because you have more than one document open.

If you have lost sight, just use Expose. That's better anyways.

I don't understand why people who got used to the contra-intuitive ways of Windows want the same crap on a Mac.

And, btw, the separate windows in Windows are not necessarilly separate proceses. Everytime I get Excel to freeze on XP, and I force-quite one window, ALL windows are gone. That's not the behavior of separate processes...

I think the separate process thing is just for IE and explorer... if you go to the folder settings in xp... it's listed half way down the page after stumbling through a million other options... tech tv said that it was to make the system more stable if you launched each window in a separate process... ergo now you can force quit/end task each window in the task manager instead of having to restart explorer or IE.
