I have a new ibook, G4, that has Tiger installed on it. When I try to shut it down, all of the applications quit, and the dock disappears. However, the computer does not shut down. The arrow stays on the screen, and the blue background remains until I manually shut it down.

I've tried using the disk utility to repair permissions and repair the disk; I've also tried removing the preferences from the preferences folder to see if that was the cause. Nothing has helped. Any suggestions?

Can you put your computer to sleep? I'm not exactly sure why your computer won't shut down - but see if it can sleep for you first.

Yes, it goes to sleep just fine. Shutting down -- as far as I can tell -- is the only problem.

I should add that I have yet to use it with many peripherals. I haven't even tried to print from it yet. It is connected to a wireless network, and I did try once turning off Airport before shutting down, but that didn't seem to make a difference.

Do you have SpeedTools running? If so, get rid of it. It will cause this issue. Check to see if you have any other processes running as well.

If the above suggestion doesn't work, try logging yourself out and then attempt to shut your computer down.. that will close any open processes or applications that might be prevent it.

Thanks to both of you. Serranot finally had it: I didn't know that I had Speedtools running, but it was in my startup items folder. I removed both Speedtools and Quickback from the startup items folder, and that did the trick. What a relief.

Does this mean I shouldn't use the SpeedTools software? Or will it be OK as long as I keep it out of my startup items? I've used it to back up my data on my old ibook (and never encountered the problem before, though that machine wasn't running Tiger.)

Anyhow, thanks again. I certainly appreciate your help.
