I've got a 1ghz titanium powerbook. Due to some issues I was having plugging my external firewire drive into the firewire port of the laptop (the drive would overheat or something.. smell like burning, and then no longer work. Went through a couple drives because of it) I decided to start using a pcmcia firewire card to connect the external drive. It's worked fine for the last several months.

Yesterday I installed the 10.4.7 update, no problems. Everything still worked fine, I was ripping Seinfeld episodes to the external drive with Handbrake and doing a general cleanup of files on it. I went to sleep with Handbrake almost finished ripping the last episode from the DVD.

This morning the computer was asleep, which is pretty much what I expected. My wife woke it up, ejected the two volumes of the hard drive, and clicked 'power off card' on the pcmcia card menu icon before taking out the card and going off to use the computer in another room.

Now, however, trying to plug in the card and see the external drive doesn't do anything. The menubar item for pcmcia cards used to show up after plugging in the card, but now it doesn't (even after a restart). The volumes on the drive don't show up in the finder.

Any ideas/advice?

You are not alone. My G4 Digital Audio hangs when waking from sleep because the Sonnet Tempo Trio will not wake. Stupid.

I have similar problems with the USB 2.0 PCI card in my G4. Works fine after booting but sleep knocks it out.

I get annoyed by the situation we are in with 3rd party hardware like this. The manufacturers put the blame on Apple as they write the drivers, Apple deny any responsibility as they do not support others' hardware. We are all stuck in the middle. Maybe the manufacturers should write their own drivers if Apple aren't up to the job.
