On my 1ghz powerbook, one of the USB ports has stopped working. I plugged an external HD into it and the light on the HD blinked on and off like crazy. Not thinking anything of it, i left it, but when i later plugged in my external modem it wouldn't recognise it, same with my digital camera when i plug it in, nothing appears in the finder and it seems the things is just dead.

Is there a way to know for sure?

Cheers

Try rebooting. Sometimes a device will cause a port to be unresponsive like that...it happens on occasion with a USB audio interface that I have. The port supplies minimal power (enough to light an optical mouse, but not enough to power a device like my audio box) but doesn't recognize devices, and a reboot returns things to normal.

I had the same thing happen to mine a while ago.

Try resetting the pram by doing the following:

Turn off the computer or restart it,

hold down apple + option + p + r (simultaneously)

wait until you hear the chime 3 times, let go and let it boot up.

Hope this works for you.
