I just took delivery of my new 1.25Ghz DDR mac today, first impressions...

The hard drive makes a lot more clicky noises than the old maxor 30Gb drive I had in my G3. When the computer boots up some fans come on that don't seem to normally run(after booting), and the computer sounds like it is going to blast off! The apple pro mouse sucks...what ever passes for non skid on the mouse is terrible, and the keyboard, while greatly noisy (I like a good noisy keyboard) does not really match the spacey theme of the cpu...it's sort of strange to look at the box and then glance down at this stark white keyboard. Oh, and who in their right minds would make a keyboard white anyway??? alas...it will be grey in a week.
Now for some positives, It is by far the best looking computer I have ever seen. It is really freaking fast!!! 62 fps on itunes, copying and file transfers are exceedingly fast. Thats it so far...

But is your serial number later than xx304xxxxxx?

it is a xx305xxxxxxx
so I would assume it is a later model than the ones the defective logic board.

They are including the white keyboards and mice with the towers? I would have thought that those would only be included on iMacs and eMacs.

The serial number has no relationship to revisions. The xx303xxx is the date on which the computer was built. The first 3 denotes that it was built in 2003, and the "03" indicates it was built in the 3rd week of the year.

Well actually, it is more like dual 1Ghz > dual 1.25GHz (check the xBench data again, it says 2xG4@1000MHz) which is still puzzling though...

I doubt the memory had such an influence.

Of course the > sign isn't really right, because xBench shows +/- 5-10 points even on the same machine in different runs. So a difference of two points doesn't mean anything at all.

But still, I would have expected the 1.25GHz to be about 10-15% higher, i.e. about 15 points at least. Even with +/- 10 points error this would still have been (worst case) 145 on the dual 1.25GHz...

Strange.

On the other hand two different people tested the machines under maybe completely different conditions. Did both quit all processes? Or did maybe some processes take CPU time and thus forged the results? What about RAM? Maybe a bad DIMM? Maybe a third-party PCI card? Maybe, maybe... I can't see any rational reason why a raw dual 1.25 shouldn't offer at least 10 points more than a raw dual 1GHz...

I will say that my results on that test were by far the best I have gotten. Normally it's around 118. I have no idea why it was so much higher that time. It was the only process running.

Now that sounds much more reasonable. That's a 15% increase and that's what I would expect. It still is strange to see that xBench can screw up so badly on a single run...
