All right, this has been driving me crazy for the past few days.

I've seen this critter for the last few days in the rocks along the river that runs near my house, but can't figure out what it is. I'd say woodchuck/groundhog, except the tail doesn't really look right and they supposedly don't like living that close to water.

Here are two pictures (you can use the drop-down in the corner to enlarge them):

Any suggestions as to what this is are welcome!

I'm no zoologist, but they look pretty much the same.

All-it sure ain't a beaver; that tail is slender, not broad and flat.

Scifience, do we have a winner?

Whatever it is, it's a cutie.
Been inclined to wander... off the beaten track.
That's where there's thunder... and the wind shouts back.

Looks like a muskrat.

What part of the world do you live in?

So far that Bisamratte seems the closest. I couldn't tell you if there was a winner yet, since I'm not positive as to what it actually is

As to what part of the world I'm in: Northeast Ohio, USA.

It's not a muskrat because your critter has fur on its tail and muskrats don't. Muskrat tails are also shaped for steering in the water. Your critter looks like a regular rodent tail. It somewhat resembles a woodchuck but the eyes are too receased to be a woodchuck, IMO.

See on the left navigation bar of Wikipedia where it lists the other languages that that article is available in? For English, it says muskrat.

I have actually found Wikipedia to be very useful for translating the names of things that aren't in the dictionary.
