MBP 2.4Ghz early 2008 model

I downloaded coconut battery the other day and it tells me that my battery is down to 3000 mAh from an original capacity of 5600 mAh... its at 300 cycles, 12 months old.

Is this normal? for a battery to loose half of its capacity within one year? I also have a macbook (white) that I bought in 2006 and it stills holds almost 100% of its original capacity...

Is my MacBook Pro's battery defective? or is it normal and I just got lucky with the (white) macbook?

Your battery should retain 80% of its capacity for the first 300 cycles. If it doesn't and you're still covered by the original 12 month warranty (not AppleCare!) Apple will replace the battery for free.
(Make sure to reset your SMC and calibrate the battery first though.)

If you're out of warranty or beyond 300 cycles you will have to buy a new battery yourself. You can still try asking Apple for a replacement though. In my experience they're rather generous.
