I thought that Apple replaced the notorious 1st-gen 500 GB Time Capsules with the newer 1 TB models, but now I'm not so sure:

Is Apple indeed replacing these units with the same model?

But if the 500 GB unit has the power supply flaw, among others, won't the replacement unit have the same problem?

It's not like 100% of 500 GB TC have the issue... mine is totally fine.

Unless Apple changed parts, I would think that the power supply capacitors eventually fail.

More importantly, can I hook both TCs to my network and copy files (include Time Machine sparseimage files) from the old one (which still works) to the new one?

They may well have revised the power supply in your new 500GB Time Capsule.

My 500GB is also working fine.

And Apple will occasionally upgrade a device if they don't have an exact replacement in stock (it's how I got an upgraded MacBook Pro) but most of the time it's an exact part for part replacement.
