This seemed like the place to post it. I will be leaving "soon." I don't have any sort of super-classified job or anything. I'm just a medic. I will be at a heavilly fortified base, and won't have to leave the base for any reason. (So they say...) I'm trying to find out if I can post blogs about my experience while I'm over there. I'm aware of others who have done it, but I'm not using that as inferred permission. When I find out for sure, I'll post a link to my blog. One has to be careful what one posts on the internet. But, what would a terrorist be doing on MacNN? We all know they use Windows.

(Edit): Tis seems like a good time to get a new MacBook....

Stay safe and keep your head down. Unlike other situations, this one doesn't have a "rear area" so medics are much more vulnerable-that and the fact that the bad guys target medics sometimes. (Insert "rat bastard" or similar perjorative here.)

Are you going with a unit or as an individual? And can you say where you're stationed and with what unit?

(I retired in '05 after 23+ years in the Air Force, so I can't help but ask...)

Take care. Give us some news. We may have political disagreements, but nothing would hurt me more than see you get hurt.

Come back, well, and alive.

Best wishes to you!

I am going with a unit to Balad AB. I have about 6 years in the Air Force. I would rather wait on giving out more info right now, but will give more when I'm sure I can.

Stay safe! Take care of yourself so you can take care of your fellow soldiers who will be in need of your services. and THANKS!

Good luck, and watch out for Thursdays... I heard that is when local Iraqi men like to fondle their protege's and they get pissed off when they are interrupted.

I hope so too. I'd like to be able to give a report every few days of what's going on. I'm just not sure on the policies we have in place for that. I'll be checking with out Public Relations to find out.

Thanks everybody for your support. This is what the political lounge should be like--conservatives and liberals just getting along merrily.

Make sure you draw pictures of your plans in the sand and send us pictures, just like Geraldo. The military loves that.

Why am I not surprised that the ultraconservatives like Kevin and abe aren't here to wish you good luck? They have been posting since yesterday, but not in this thread. Hmm....

I don't even know what I am, to be honest.

I know that some conservatives despise me as well as some liberals. It's the middle-of-the-road that I try to walk.

Anyway, good for you in trying to help others. You're a special kind of person to give of yourself the way you do...we all wish you the very best.

Seriously though, thanks everybody for the support. I really appreciate it. I also just found out that my wife's parents will be able to come out and help with things while I'm gone. A one-year-old and an almost-three-year-old would be rough for my wife by herself. Thta was my biggest concern--now gone.

greenG4 -

Please keep us informed of your experiences while you are "over there."

I'm sure that no matter what anyone's political persuasion, everyone here wishes you a safe tour and that you can come home safely and soon.

Good luck and stay safe. Do your job well and make us proud!

abe is banned and unable to see this thread.

Maybe Kevin doesn't want to be just a "me too" kind of uy or sends his well wishes via PM.

Why are you so judgmental?

abe/aberdeenwriter/mojo2 is still here. He appears trapped in that alternate reality called The MJ conspiracy thread.

I just made an observation, not a judgement.

I'll point out the obvious to you:
That thread is in the regular lounge and NOT in here.

Sorry you missed the obvious.

Oh man.. I'm on my own with our 2 boys (2 and 7) this week while my wife is gone. It's a full-time job! Glad that you have some family to come help out.

You been told you won't be leaving the base?

For any reason?

I find that highly suspect.

Good luck, and hold on tight to your sanity.

I was last attached to the 37th Training Wing at Lackland. I spent time with the 81TRW at Keesler (way, WAY too long!), and with the 67 Tactical Reconaissance Wing (85-87) at Bergstrom. I was also part of the Air Division we had before it became US Air Force South while stationed in Panama and part of the 355 wing at D-M while stationed in Honduras. I got around a little, but not as much as I wanted, and almost never to where I wanted to go. I even volunteered to go to the desert twice and got turned down. Go figure.

I got to go through Chaz more than a few times, both going back and forth to Panama, and on my first trip down to Hondo. I like the city a lot more than the base, but the Airlift folks were always great.

I wanted to go to Guam but never made it there.
But a lot of the munitions I hauled came through there.

I was 451st airlift until I was promoted and flew left seat for the 457th.
Then assigned to Dobbins in 1994 after Africa.

My Airforce career was the closest thing to a civillian job.
