I believe his idea is to simply chop it in half with an angle grinder the moment the transaction is complete. He's not a big fan of Gibsons. The lore is strong with that one.
(He's been on about it for years but I don't think he's actually going to go through with it. It's probably just some shred-fu koan or something.)

Meh. I've been playing for 23 some-odd years, and a guitar is a tool. It's an instrument. If you're a good layer, you can make music on any kind of guitar — and if you have the need for various tones. sounds, nuances, etc., the purist will choose multiple guitars in his toolbox over a processor.
Metal? Les Paul.
Rock? Strat.
Acoustic? K-14c.
Mellow? T5.
Folk/Country? Tele.

Like I said, he's the local shred-fu master, not the local twang banger.

I would put the LP for Rock as well. Metal and the like is being covered by the pointy guitar superstrats.

Very confusing list, since definitions are not absolute.
Strat for rock? You got SSS in it or have you dropped a PAF in the bridge? Does your definition of "rock" include the likes of the Eagles or Hootie?

No. Although easy to see where the confusion lies.
You said "multiple guitars for multiple tones". I said "one guitar for one feel" - not meaning "one tele for a country feel and one LP for a rock feel".

BTW, this is the last time I attempt late-night guitar humour. Obviously you tele-lovers are lost to the dark side and unable to appreciate the fine art of shred-fu.

Eagles = Rock = Strat.
Norma Jean = Metal = Les Paul
Audioslave = Rock = LP or Strat
Rilo Kiley = Alt-Folk Rock = Tele

As for feel, a good player also selects his/her guitar for that — that's a no brainer. It also why you modify your guitar if necessary (new neck, getting a neck reshaped, refretted, etc.).

Ok after a week of playing, tuning, adjusting and cleaning this guitar I can finally say I am happy with it.
The ONLY thing I don't like are the pickups. The bridge I heard was basically a Dimarzio super distortion. Which I've never liked (They don't clean up with volume knob adjustments) and it's not that "sweet" sounding.
Probably gonna put a Tone Zone in the bridge and a Air Norton in the neck.

You won't be able to clean up much with the TZ in the bridge. Go with something lower-powered. Like a Screamin' Demon (bridge) and PAF/'59 (neck) or something. Less power, more tone.

Because they're a girl's guitar. They're for girls, I tell ya. Can't perform shred-fu on a Tele. Girls can't perform shred-fu. Therefore, they're a girls' guitar.
(heh, just some World of Doof™ folk lore to brighten your evening. Anything other than a Strat or superStrat is open for abuse )
I should mention that Prince plays a Tele copy. As Kevin will attest, Prince shreds like no one else. Seriously.
As for me, I have a 1971 Les Paul Deluxe and a 68 LP Professional that is currently with Les' personal guitar tech.
The rest of the electrics are ones I've made myself. But that was ages ago, I've grown tried of making necks.

I don't want a pristine clean. Just something a bit more bluesy. The Super Distortion doesn't clean up at all.
The TZ really isn't THAT hot.
And yes, Prince can play.
His "tele" Is a Hohner with EMG pickups.

Arh. Fair enough.

I dunno. It seems a bit fizzy for my tastes. I kind of prefer "only-just-above-vintage" outputs.

Yeah, knew it was a Hohner. Didn't know about the EMGs.
And anyways. It's one of the best-kept secrets that Prince is actually a girl. I've seen "Under The Cherry Moon" so you can't convince me otherwise.

Anyways, back to shred-fu. The shred is strong with this one:

Sure sure.
That sounds more like scale excercises than anything. I never was into the whole tapping thing either.

That "shred" crap doesn't impress me. It sounds like the junk I was listening to back in the 80s. Playing notes fast doesn't give me a woody, sorry.

I do think playing fast has it's place. But doing it CONSTANTLY is lame.

There's a reason it's called "shred-fu".
Like "kung-fu", continued escalation into the upper realms of technical ability allows the regular techniques to be executed more easily - they become second nature, able to be performed without effort.

I've always liked "coffee table" guitars as they are called.
Wood grains look better to me than sparkle finishes.

Well a tele isn't really a "shred" guitar.
Country type music isn't really known as "shredding"
Even though they do play fast.
Though the first two Zepplin albums were mostly all Telecaster.
It wasn't till Zepp II did Page move to the LesPaul.

You can play the blues on anything!
But strats are nice.
Just don't put HUGE strings on it, tune down and act like you've came up with a new sound.

You can, of course...but for some reason the blues are synonymous with the Strat in my mind. Especially after seeing this so many times...
Plus, I love the feel of a Strat so much better than most electric guitars. It has a certain smooth "gliding" feel to it - at least it does to me.

Heh that was the guy I was talking about people copying off of.
Of course he was just copying off of Hendrix while putting his own spin on it.
