I've been trying to edit mpeg files but no programs I've used will recognize it.
I'm talking about mpeg NOT mpeg 1, 2 or 4.

What software could I use to edit?

iDVD will not recognise plain mpeg files. I get an error msg when I try to open them.

thanks in advance.

If you do not talk about MPEG-1, MPEG-2 or MPEG-4, there's no MPEG format left you could be talking about. There's no such thing as a "plain mpeg" file that's not MPEG-1, -2 or -4.

Hi tsilou...thanks for responding....so are all mpeg files - regardless of type - having the file extension .mpg or .mpeg?

Yes.

MPEG (Moving Picture Experts Group) is the name of the ITU-standard.

If that is the case how do you find out if a file is mpeg 1, 2, or 4?

Open the file in QuickTime and open the Move Info window (command-I). It will tell you the video format.

Almost all video files with the .mpg and .mpeg filename extensions are MPEG-1. There are some other filename extensions that MPEG-1 uses (.m1v, .m1a, and .mp3 being the most common alternatives, especially .mp3) but .mpg and .mpeg are almost exclusively used by MPEG-1.

That said, do what SS3 GokouX suggests and check in the QuickTime player, just to be sure.

I love how counterintuitive it is that MP3s are MPEG-1.

All the standards include a container format as well as at least one video format and at least one audio format. .mpg is the container format for MPEG-1, which mean that the video in it USUALLY is MPEG-1 as well, but it is possible to put MPEG-2 video in such a container as well. The official container for MPEG-2 video is the .VOB files on DVDs.
