Hey everyone;

So I own a two month old 2011 MBP, and last week, someone gave me an external Firewire DVD-R drive to use with it. Which is groovy and all, but I was thinking of putting this combo Blu-ray player/DVD burner drive I saw at Fry's into the Firewire case instead. A couple of questions come to mind, though:

Can I play Blu-ray discs on my MBP at all? Does DVD Player play Blu-rays? Does VLC? If not, what else could I use?

If I wanted to make my one legal backup copy of a movie I purchased on Blu-ray, would HandBrake be able to rip that disc for me? If not, what could? What could make a disc image of it?

Thanks, all!

Well, that thread talks about "Blu-ray files", which I don't know as being different from just playing Blu-ray discs, which is what I want to do.

The article seems a little clearer that no, there's nothing to play Blu-ray discs on a Mac. But I will, of course, accept a second opinion.

The thread covers that, too.

You could use Windows I believe.
I have plenty of more important things to do, if only I could bring myself to do them....

Also, see this thread (notably, my post above, in which I already linked to your thread, and the post after that, in which I referred to it again).
