A firmware update killed your Spotlight? Sounds like BS to me.

you can rebuild your spotlight. open System Preferences > Spotlight > Privacy. drag your hard drive into the list and then drag it out.

Yeah it wont have been the firmware update - as that really isnt related to spotlight.

Spotlight keeps it's indexes in an invisible folder called .Spotlight-V100

You can remove these by going to the root folder of each of your drives with the rerminal and deleteing the folder, restart and then spotlight will re-index everything. that might work. Theres probably apps on macupdate to let you delete the spotlight folders if you are uncomftable with the terminal.
I free'd my mind... now it won't come back.

I think that what SLam suggested, adding the hard disk to the Privacy pane and removing it, should cause the database to get rebuilt without needing to use the Terminal (or rerminal, or any other type of erminal).

Ticking sound coming from a .pkg package? Don't let the .bom go off! Inspect it first with Pacifist. Macworld - five mice!

Define "doesn't work"

Is it that the blue icon is not there? Is it that it does not find anything? Is it that when pushed a error is thrown at you? Is it ... etc.

We need more info about this, because for sure has nothing to do with the firmware update.

His drive probably became corrupted since his last reboot, and something was running from a cached copy and when he rebooted it no longer worked.

I agree it would have nothing to do with the firmware update.

have you tried rebooting... I've had the spotlight meunlet stop working, even after a forced index rebuild, only to have the thing work again when I rebooted.
