I heard a rumor that if you buy the advertised product, the ad goes away. This works on Amazon. Might work for Nissans too.

Unfortunately, the Goog reads my Amazon purchase confirmations and gets the bright idea to run ads for what I just bought.

What a bunch of sucky overlords.

It's time I get that Nissan Rogue subscription on Amazon. Might even get a 5% discount.

11 days with zero response is pretty impressive, even for MacNN.

This has reached bullshit proportions. I don't care about you fixing it, but I do care about talking into empty space.

I'm pretty astounded by the lack of ****s given around here.

Everyone does realize that web advertising is a sub-sub-sub leased thing, right? A banner space may belong to advertising wholesaler A, who then sells timeslots or correlated views, or simply a random number of views to web ad placer B who then sells some of them to advertiser C. Which means that first we have to figure out which ad space gave the entré to the offending popups, then track back to see who hosted the ad, and finally to find out who sold the advertising in the first place.

Our Front Office certainly isn't the type of folks who ignore what their customers tell them (or we wouldn't be back on vBulletin), but it isn't like they can simply walk across the hall and punch Joe Popup in the face, either.

No argument here! Unfortunately, Joe is most likely a conglomerate of advertisers, above-board and otherwise.

In the Air Force, they didn't teach you the importance of "copy that" when using a walkie?

Demon's reply was essentially "copy that." I replied to the apparent expectation that someone could snap their fingers and correct a very complex issue instantaneously.

Basically, I took Turtle's post to mean "why hasn't it been fixed?" And I took it poorly; I wasn't at my best yesterday afternoon, and I was snippy with a lot of people.

Suffice to say this: I'm sorry for the sharpness of my reply, but it's a difficult issue that often takes a while to sort out. The last thing the management wants to do is turn off regular members with inappropriate ads, and I'm positive they're working on fixing this issue. I'd like to see them find a way to penalize web advertisers for not properly screening their ads to fit their destinations here; if they pay for a particular spot, and go outside it, it should cost them a premium. I think that would get their attention better than frequent episodes of "hey, you did it again!"

Glenn, no hard feelings on my side. I read your post 3 times, and I still don't see it as sharp or snippy.

I understand that you mods have limited control. And I think we all agree at times that the powers that (should) be at 'NN sometimes are a bit, uhm, removed from what's going on in the forums.

Thanks, Turtle.

On topic, I haven't had a pop-up (particularly on my iPad) in a while. Any new reports lately?

Then you deserve an apology as well. I read turtle's post differently, so I thought you were taking aim at me.

It is generally in this model because it takes a rather substantial business to organize and manage such advertising, which then cuts the net realized from that advertising.

I got a nokia banner at screen bottom on my iPad

I didn't notice the ad initially and was confused by the behaviour when I tried to move the page by swiping up as I usually would from the bottom

Expected behaviour is that the page would scroll or possibly an iOS popup appear (open, open in new tab, add to reading list, copy - as per a long tap on a normal link)

Expected behaviour is not that releasing my finger well away from the banner would launch a new tab

This is scummy and confusing to the visitor who didn't intend to tap the link and scummy to the advertiser who presumably has to pay for each click

One of these days I should dummy up more example advertising. Of what spam should be like. Kias with pop-up machine guns, slave girls from venus, discounts on that new designer drug that makes you forget about unpaid bills.

Barbie drives any darn thing she asks for. She's got sugar daddies all over the place. Known fact.

Perhaps she would like a new pair of Levi's to go with her Kia and Nissan while she's playing Battlefield.

Ads are targeted more often than not. So who ordered a Barbie recently, to fill out their collection? Subego is the obvious suspect, since he got the ad ...
