Hello.
I was wondering. Should I by applecare with my new powermac?
It looks like there is some problem with the new powermacs so may be it is wiser to by applecare? Any thoughts or experiences out there?

A/C isn't as important on desktops as it is with portables. You have 1 year from the date of purchase to add it, so you have time to determine matters.

What problem are you referring to? Some people swear by AppleCare while others do not. Randman correctly notes that it's a better investment for laptops than desktops, since laptops are treated more roughly. I am thankful that I have had great luck with my Macs. If you're not as fortunate, or if you're running into problems, you have a year to purchase AppleCare.

Than you Big Mac and Randman. I have never had any problem with my ibook or my Old powermac 7200. But as I have read maccnn I have heard about problems with power supply and graphic cards noise. So I thought that it might be wise to by applecare so that I have an extended warranty. But as you both say. I have a whole year to by apple care. And problems mostly come within the first year of usage. And I have only once used telephone support.

I bought APpleCare 4 1/2 years ago with my then-new G4 tower. And I did have several occasions to use telephone support service. But if I were buying a new desktop, I doubt I'd buy the extended AC this time around, for the simple reason that the boards and Internet are so helpful. I have found the answers to many problems through visiting various online sites and forums. That won't help with a hardware problem, but many times it's not that, anyway -- it's some sort of software glitch.

that said, I have AC for my PB and would go that route again, without question.

The $250 (or less) on PowerMac AppleCare is a good investment for me.

The only time you HAVE to buy AppleCare immediately (IMHO) is if you are purchasing an Apple display at the same time since BOTH the Mac and the Apple display will be covered for the 3 year period.

As with all insurance, the house always wins. But if I have a major problem in the first 3 years, it pays off.

If you have good luck your first year and can bear the cost of any repairs for the 2 years after that, you don't need it. But knowing the cost of just the replacement parts, $250 is cheap...YMMV.

Just another post of agreemend with everyone here. I never got AC for my desktop and its a 3 months away from its 3rd birthday with no problems. On the other hand my ibook is 2 months away from its first birthday and I am going to buy AC for it unless new ones come out June 6/7 and I sell this one to get a new one.
