Yup, 100% free.

nine inch nails: the slip

The music is available in a variety of formats including high-quality MP3, FLAC or M4A lossless at CD quality and even higher-than-CD quality 24/96 WAVE. Each track also has embedded lyrics and it's own artwork.

It's not the type of music I would normally listen to, but hey... can't beat their attitude:

we encourage you to
remix it
share it with your friends,
post it on your blog,
play it on your podcast,
give it to strangers,
etc.

Thanks for the heads up!

I believe this is the full album many of us have been waiting for, the last free release was an instrumental only. This one was never supposed to be a free release AFAIK but was released as a surprise yesterday much to everyones delight.

I love, love, love the fact that someone is finally starting to take advantage of proper tagging and including lyrics in the music files themselves. About bloody time.

Say what you will about Reznor's music, but he sure as hell is on top of things when it comes to technology and consumer friendliness.

I wouldn't say that:

Nine Inch Nails Album Generated $1.6 Million in First Week (Updated) | Listening Post from Wired.com

Although the new album is entirely free unlike "Ghost I-IV", I believe there will be quite a few people that buy the physical CD just to support the Artist when they normally would've pulled it from a torrent. And he doesn't have to feed a single penny to a major label. This guy is really walking the walk.

He is an independent artist. He makes enough money on sales and touring to support a "free" release like this.

Clearly it's not a viable option for 99.9% of artists, but he can pull it off easily.

Isn't Interscope his own label?

Free crap is still crap.
Being in debt and celebrating a lower deficit is like being on a diet and celebrating the fact you gained two pounds this week instead of five.

Since I'm being paged...

Yes, Interscope is his label.

I liked this album. It's not my favorite, but it has some great stuff in it. I like the use of MP3 tags, art, and lyrics.

As for "free crap is still crap", I can say the same about posts in here

I'm impressed. Most people get greedier and more selfish as they get richer and richer. More people should realize when they have 'enough' and do what they like to do for the love of doing it, rather than just to get more and more money. Trent is the opposite of someone like Madonna who is obsessed with keeping people from 'stealing' her music and her money.

I love the U.S., but we need some time apart.

Bands release videos that easily cost as much as an entire album and basically give those away. Records should be almost considered a promotional tool for touring and merch.

Then you would have to include your own opinions on this as well.

Either that or it's a gimmick to pander to the tiny number of people who actually listen to their music.

Just sayin'…

That makes no sense but even if it did I wish more artists would pander to their fans that way.

It makes sense in my head and that's all that matters!

I'll be buying the physical CD. I've not hunted down so many halos to allow one of them to just be virtual when I could have a physical piece in my collection. I'm still proud of having Halo 1; even if it is still easy to find unopened.
If I had a signature, it would be better than yours.

Halos? Is that what you call NIN CDs? PHM was my first CD ever... several years before I could afford a CD player. What's a halo?

I have Halo 0

Yeah, I have every Halo ever made. It's a cool collection.

Every NIN album has a Halo number. I think on PHM it's above the UPC code.

Weird... I've never heard of that and I've been listening to them for like 20 years. Do they mean anything or are they just a non-reason to collect ever single disc?

There are two or three discs without a halo number (One of which was an Australian tour edition single) and some have half numbers. The Down In It single was Halo 1 and he intended them to be numbered as such from the very beginning. I'm not sure what the original reasoning for it was.
