Hey all
Some of you may remember I opened a thread about my Dad several months ago, where I mentioned he was diagnosed with lymphoma cancer. Readers of my site have seen posts about progress, etc., over the last 8 months.
Anyway, after months of fighting, my Dad finally passed away in his sleep in the wee hours of the morning yesterday.
He was diagnosed with asbestosis over 20 years ago, and the lymphoma and the chemo exacerbated the lung damage, and this is what ended up taking his life. He passed with Mom beside him, and he did so on his own terms: he removed his oxygen line is one final movement to say he was going on his call. He also passed at home, right where he wanted to. He was ready, he was just so, so tired.
I love you Dad — you were truly my best friend.
Thanks guys, for all the support so many of you have been offline.

My condolences.
I'm glad he passed on his terms in the environment he wanted to be in with the people he wanted to be with. In charge of his life until the very end.

My sincere and heartfelt condolences. I'm glad that he got to go on his own terms; dignity is one of the first things we lose when we're ill, and it looks like your father clung to his.

I also lost my dad to cancer. I lost my grandma and grandpa the same year. It will take time, but it will get easier. Eventually you will only think about what made him special to you

Sorry for your loss RAILhead. He was fortunate to die in his own terms with the people he loved by his side. Not many get to share that final moment with their family. I don't know what I can offer, but I'm always available to talk or whatever .

Maury, those are great pictures. Your dad looked like a great guy. I am sorry to hear about his passing.
Only this morning I thought, I really should book a flight and go visit my parents for a week or so. I'd hate to be in a situation where I was always "too busy" until it was too late.

I'm sorry to hear about your loss RAILhead. Losing a parent, particularly a father is often difficult as there's nothing quite as seemingly immortal as a father. My thoughts and prayers are with you and yours my brother.

I'm sorry to hear this news and hope the condolences of myself and the rest of the NN crowd show you how much we all care. Your father seems like he was a great man and I'm sure passing on his own terms meant as much to him as it does to your family.
Thank you for sharing such a personal and private part of your life with us.

Your parents were a beautiful couple in their day! From experience, losing a parent is a major event in one's life and I offer my sincere condolences. I think it's fantastic that he pulled his oxygen as his last act, pretty cool and memorable. Peace of heart and mind to you and your family.

I fear that day, like nothing else in this life, and the thought that my parents are going to die gives me chills. I didn't turn out as they wanted, and my lifestyle is more than a little irritating to them, but I know how much they love me. My dad is my best friend, and my entire life I've been able to tell him anything, even the things that disappointed or scared him. It doesn't matter, the good and the bad are all the same to him, he just wants to be part of my life.
It sounds like you have the same relationship with your father too Maury, and I'm sure you know that it's the greatest gift he could have given you. It's part of what has made you the man you are today, and you'll carry that on to everyone you meet.
God bless you both,

Commercial or industrial? In other words, did your dad have to pay for his health care after diagnosis, or did someone else-the company he worked for or insurance-foot the bill?

Sorry to hear about your loss. I haven't lost a parent yet, but I know it's part of the deal. I hope the good relationship you had with your dad gives you some strength now when you need it.

Sorry for your loss Maury. It's something I feel I'd have a hard time dealing with. Seems best that his family was at his side and he was comfortable.

When in college, I was confident that death would never 'phase me' again. I lived in a mortuary for two years - just as a 'lockup man, showing people into the viewing rooms every other night (there were two of us 'working/living there) and transferring calls at night. Death just became an impersonal 'case name & number.' kind of thing.
... a couple of years later *MY* father passed away one bright cheerful day in May ... and people had to lead me around by the hand for a couple of days (daze).
It's never an easy thing.
Sorry,
Zip
