Is your iMac Intel based? -> iWork
What do you mean by "and such"? If you need a spreadsheet -> Office
Do you like having good layout features in your word processor? -> iWork
Would you rather use something you are familiar with? -> Office

Personally I like iWork a lot and prefer it over Office.

I suggest you try out NeoOffice until you made your decision which package to get.

Seriously most people need both. I like and use iWork, but when someone sends me a complicated .doc file or an .xls document then I pretty much have to fire up word and excel.

Do you prefer Apples, or oranges? I like both, for different things.

Use both. I pretty much clean up styles or set styles with iWork.

Letter writing? It doesn't matter. Use Textedit.

Like peeb said, I just use TextEdit to write letters. Word is a superior word processor, Pages is much better for layout (people who attempt to do fancy designs in Word ought to be shot if they don't shoot themselves first). Keynote is better than Powerpoint in every respect I can think of.
