All you have to remember is that a web site is just the front end for any business - there's nowt special about a web site.
So take the web out of the equation, then think about what kind of business you want to create.

Actually, it's the database, algorithms and advertising platform that have served Google so well. If all they had was the search interface without a legitimate service business behind it, they would still be mooching a school server.
