I got a new 24" iMac and wanted to partition it so that I have a boot drive and a data drive.

I tried several times from my G5 iMac to partition it via Target Mode (with the appropriate Intel compatible partition type for the C2D iMac) but each time it would hang at the partition step. If I restarted, the drive would be unreadable and the partition buttons would be greyed out. I could reclaim the drive by re-initializing it and then erasing it, but it would only give me one big drive. If I tried to partition it again, the same thing would happen.

Finally I gave up and just ran the partition utility from the install discs, and that worked. I'm reinstalling the OS now.

Any reason why it wouldn't work from Disk Utility on my G5 iMac? It's running Mac OS 10.4.7, although I note the build number is different from the C2D iMac if that makes any difference.

P.S. Is Disk Utility not Universal? It isn't on my G5 iMac in any case.

No, you can't partition a Mactel that way. Mactels use a different partition table scheme.

Yep, IIRC Intels need to be partitioned from Intels.

Right, the PowerPC version of Disk Utility doesn't support GPT. More info here:

Well, my PowerPC Disk Utility does have the option for it, and that's what I used. I'm not at my G5 iMac at the moment, but it's there, and there on my G4 Cube too. I selected GUID for my Intel iMac. In fact, the default was GUID when I went to this option.

OTOH, when I checked out my external Firewire drive on this Cube, the default was Apple Partition Map, but GUID can be selected:

My bad...I haven't kept up with PowerPC updates to Disk Utility, so they must have added it at some point.

Amusingly (or not) I can't get Disk Utility to actually complete the partitioning (from my G4 Al PB). I select GUID (in anticipation of the C2D MBP arriving shortly) and I get 5 per cent completed and things just stop. The app is still responsive; I can pull down menus, quit, etc., but no partitioning.

Partitioning (and formatting) with the Apple Partition Map (the default for PowerPC) takes a few seconds. Meh.
