Do you have to have a mobile device for iCloud to work?

Contacts and Address Book seem to be working but not Photostream. Directions from Apple indicate that you have to setup your mobile device with iOS5 first. Since my iPhone is jailbroken, I won't update to 5 until the untethered version is released.

What good is Photostream w/o a iOS5 device ?
It's really useless, if you just have one Mac and no iOS5 devices.

I can show pictures to friends anywhere I can access the internet with a normal web browser. That's the appeal to me. Or be able to give family members a link to look at pics. Is there a public area?

Nope, PhotoStream doesn't work like that at the moment.

I also have a MacBook. Would be nice if everything would sync to it too.

Well, the point of Photostream is to stream new photos taken.
You don't "take" pictures with your MacBook or iMac, therefore, it's not really intended to work that way. AT least not right now.
