hello, i'd like to do a DIY memory upgrade putting a 1GB ram into my pb 15" along with the stock 512MB. i'm new to mac and laptop but have hardware experience in PC, is it just as easy as pc hardware installation or a skilled person is recommanded for this task ?

i've read the DIY manual from apple but u know reading is always easier than working hands-on.

you certainly DIY. it is as simple as what you have done on pc.

Memory upgrade on a mac is as easy as it seems, possibly even easier.

I just did my new 15" PB and it's just as easy as any PC. Make sure you have the correct size of screwdriver. The screws on mine had a little loc-tite on them but I was lucky that my wife had an eyeglasses repair kit with the right screwdriver.

Before you buy a new ram stick, you might want to open it up and see if you have an empty slot. You probably don't. My 15" PB came with 512MB in the form of 2x256 chips. So going from 512 to 1.5GB will require 1x1gb + 1x512, and the 2x256 you currently have will have to be removed. So if you just buy a 1GB stick, you'll likely just be able to upgrade to 1.25GB because you'll have to remove some ram to make room.

Ram for these things is pretty cheap these days though at about $100 for a GB stick. I'd just get 2, and then you'll really be set

i just got my pb15 a month ago, i think they put a 1x512... so i'll have one slot empty

You do not need to physically open the PB to know how many memory modules you have. Simply go to About this mac menu and click on Memory.

You'll need a #0 phillips head screwdriver to remove the two plate screws. And there is no Loctite on the threads.
