The company said its decision was based on a lack of 64-bit software applications from Microsoft and the trend toward 64-bit extension Xeon chips coming from Intel and AMD's Opteron.

I don't think that HP was ever in the buis to push the envelope with breakthrough performance, they just want the cold hard moolah.

This really isn't all that exciting, HP is bad.

Not so surprising, the Itanium isn't particularly well-suited to workstations. As the article stated, HP was the last major OEM that still sold Itanium workstations. Anyway, misleading article title, since they are still leaders in the 64bit server market.
