I was inspired to create this thread because I recently replaced a Motorola AT&T DSL Netopia modem+router with a NETGEAR DG834G. The NETGEAR has a built-in DSL modem and is a wired and wireless router (802.11b/g spec).

I hated the Netopia router. It was extremely slow at loading its admin pages (html interface) and the interface was a burden to use, which made it difficult to configure or simply to figure out what was going on.

The NETGEAR has a quick, clean html-based interface. In three minutes I'd configured it for everything I wanted. It even recognized AT&T DSL out of the box (default VPC/VCI config is 8/35 and just input your DSL account name + password for PPPoE).

So does anyone here use their ISP's modem-router combo or your own? Comments or issues?

When I'm installing ADSL routers for people I always put the DG834G in because it's cheap & reliable.

At home I'm using my ISPs modem because it's cable and you can't buy any replacements (they'll replace it if it breaks). I have that going into a Smoothwall box (it's a firewall & DHCP server) which then hosts the rest of the network.

I'm still using the Westell 516 modem that Southwestern Bell gave me many years ago when I first signed up for DSL with them. It's been a trooper. I've replaced my primary router once since then, but the modem has been really great.

At my first residence I just got U-verse - it's pretty awesome. They provided a combo VDSL modem and wireless router from 2WIRE. At my other residence I have RoadRunner and use the small, generic cable modem they provided along with a WPN824v2, but I also use a Linksys connected to the Netgear for wireless coverage due to the placement of the Netgear. I'm pretty happy with the setups right now.
