I bought a 15-inch Powerbook last December, and I've had a problem with Quicktime the entire time. Quicktime won't play .avi files.

"Some necessary QuickTime software is missing. It may be available on the QuickTime Web site. If you have a dialup connection to the internet, make sure it is active, then click the Continue button to check for software."

I've checked for the software, but I can't figure out which one to download in order to help with this problem. Any ideas/suggestions?

The easiest solution is to use VLC instead of QuickTime Player. The other possibility is that you may need to install DivX or something.

What formats are the avis in (Command-i)?

You can use divx 6 or 3ivx 4.5 for Quicktime...I'm using them now. Excellent proggies. Have been compressing my dvds to avi like a madman recently. BTW they are "mine". I own a media company.

As stated above - VLC works best.

Although I can play 99% of files qith Quicktime. I have the following Plugins:

XviD Codec
DivX 6
Flip4Mac
I free'd my mind... now it won't come back.

I'd love to use VLC, but will be using MediaCentral which uses the QT engine. Most files play fine, xvid, divx - all the .avi files work, except for those encoded with AC3 sound. QT throws the error above. Most things don't have AC3, but rather use mp3 - if I want 5.1 from something I'm encoding I'll use .mp4 and do AAC sound which works well in QT.

is there an add-on out there that will enable QT to play these AC3 audio tracks? Or do I need to just convert things in order to play them?
