Probably I still had the PowerBook G3 Kanga (the first one with a G3, the one before the Wallstreet PowerBooks were released). But perhaps I already had my iBook G3 500 MHz Dual USB …

I think I was using a Fisher-Price G3 tower attached to one of the new Apple LCD displays.

Power Macintosh 7600/120, which was upgraded to a 300 MHz G3 processor. Briefly replaced with a Power Macintosh 8500 for about a year before I bought my QuickSilver Power Mac G4 867 MHz.

The QuickSilver was replaced about two years later with a refurbed first-generation Power Mac G5 dual 2.0 GHz which was my main machine for almost 5 years when it died, forcing a replacement. I replaced it with a 2009 Nehalem Mac Pro dual 2.26 GHz. These days I've been using my 17 inch MacBook Pro C2D 2.8 GHz as my main machine, though. I have a feeling the Mac Pro will be around for another 4 years at least, if not longer.

My personal record for length of time with a computer being my "main machine" is 9 years. My Apple IIgs, which I used from 1987 to 1996, when I bought the 7600. I still have that computer, and it still works great, which is more than I can say for ANY hardware I currently own. I highly doubt that my Mac Pro will still work after 23 years.

400 Mhz iMac DV SE

It replaced my Performa 6115CD. The speed difference was night and day.

I'm pretty sure Sek and I joined at around the same time. I remember doing the motherboard swap to get the voodoo2 and mezzanine slot from the earlier rev A imac, with the faster rev D imac processor. I was the first, I think... I even had someone from "imac2day" trying to send me a digital camera to document my mods. Weird.
I remember that. I discovered these forums through the iMac2Day site. What ever happened to your FrankeniMac?

I believe it was a 7300/200 with 128 MB, with a 750AV monitor. Aaaah first year of college! One year later my HD would fail me during the finals week, good times..

12" PowerBook. That thing worked marvelously for the time I had it. I would consistently rock Dreamweaver, Safari, iTunes, FireFox, and Photoshop all at the same time and it handled it like a champ. It was my first Mac and it definitely hooked me for life.

Maybe my blueberry toilet seat ibook. Or the Pismo that followed it. Maybe the 1400/G3 that came before. Can't remember, but the timing seems right for the blueberry from Sears.

Nope, my original name was mac-at-kearsarge (with a join date of Oct 23, 1999), but I do stand corrected as I joined a year earlier then I thought. At that time I was using my UMAX S900/180

PowerMac G3/300 Mini Tower with OS 9.

Still in my gadget closet. Got it in late 98 (replaced a PowerMac 7100/80) and it went through many upgrades over the years until I replaced it in '04. Great machine.

Crappy old PC laptop. Forgot/repressed name of brand. Possibly Vega+ or something like that. It was magnificently craptacular.

First Mac was about a year later, a 17” PowerBook G4 (1.67 GHz). Lovely machine, still runs like a charm, though it’s since been sold to a friend.

Glad to see I'm not the only (former) PC user in the group. I actually had two different PC desktops and a Dell laptop at that time. I subsequently built two more desktops to replace the older ones, and soon got a newer Dell laptop (great deals and discounts were available to military members around that time...). Then around 2003-2004 my wife really needed a laptop for school. At that time the lightest, most powerful laptop going was the G4 iBook... It was pretty easy to afford, and it turned out to be just the thing for her. When I retired and the VA sent me to school, the counselor asked me what kind of computer I needed-I asked for a loaded MBP. While the MBP I got wasn't "loaded," it was solid, reliable and it's still my "on the road" computer. I'm using my first gen aluminum Intel iMac right now...

The point is that these forums showed me a lot of great information, and the more I learned about Macs and the OS, the more I realized that putting up with the extra intellectual workload of using Windows wasn't worthwhile. If all the peripherals I've collected over the years had OS X support, I wouldn't even bother with thinking much about Windows at all.

Pismo. 400Mhz. Only Mac in the company....until they got a PC e-mail virus, and only the Mac could read the virus so we could block and eliminate it.

First time I networked was on an Apple //e with a voice coupler, my dad would dial into work. He had a couple text games we could play. After we got an actual modem, we dialed into my neighbor's BBS.

When I actually got to my dad's work, they had Sun workstations running Netscape. Everything was in B&W.

Finally, after our family got a Macintosh IIvx (yeah, yeah, I know) I dialed into our BBS running C|Net Amiga BBS software, it had Lynx on it. So I could browse the web using Lynx from my Black Knight terminal software.

After that, we finally got normal dialup internet access.

That was just my first experience with the "World Wide Web". A friend and I used to use his state-of-the-art TRS80 to log into a local BBS that had a huge shareware library. We had to mechanically place the phone on a cradle attached to the TRS80 to dial in. We also used cassette drives to load software.

That's the acoustic coupler. Rubber cradle, and you put the phone on it. When I was a little kid, my brother and I could scream/squeal at the same frequencies as the coupler, my dad was yell at us because we were screwing up his connection to work.

I worked with people who could whistle at 2600Hz and thus disconnect whole trunk lines to the airborne switchboard I worked on. In some cases all it took was to whistle briskly up the scale... This tended to get people "talked about," often in terms of "going out the hatch first," and without a parachute.

The Intel era is recent history, I'm pre iPod and pre iMac. I don't go a far as the first Steve Jobs era, but I remember Apple being in serious trouble when Gil Amelio was around before Steve came back.. they basically had too many different models of computers, there was the 5000 and 6000 series Performas, and then the 7000, 8000 and 9000 series Power Macs, and that was just the desktops.

It'll be much easier if you just comply.

Yeah, though I do wish they hadn't killed the Newton.

I think most of us on the NN predate Mac OS X, and many more started back in the Pre-Mac OS days (System 1 - 7). I started on System 6 on a Macintosh Classic, when I was in 2nd grade.

Well yeah, but could you imagine what might have been had they continued developing it? We lost out on a good 8 years of R&D. Who knows, maybe we'd have had something like the iPhone in 2003.

I don't know... the newton required a stylus. I'm glad they canned it, because it allowed the iPhone development to be out of the box. Newton era stuff wasn't ballsy try new things apple, it was just slightly different.

I ran Unreal for a year before I figured out it was rendering in software, when I accidentally turned the Voodoo on I nearly shat my pants.

I had a PC with a Voodoo5. After 3dfx went under, it was a good 4 years before anything could match it.
