So the new windows client (same interface as the mac client) is released on Monday. Valve said the mac client was coming in April. So mac client on Monday? I can't find any news about a release date anywhere.

All glory to the hypnotoad.

I was clicking around the steam site yesterday and found no "release date" or even a timeline for release with a general date.

Maybe they like keeping everyone in suspense.

I'm glad they enjoy it, because I'm going nuts waiting for it to come out for OS X.

It will be nice to have a decent outlet for games, I'm just wondering how many of them well run on my 2.0GHz C2D Macbook with Intel GMA? I'm guessing not much more than Popcap type games like PvZ. But then again, how would a current Macbook/Mac Mini go with a 9400M or 320M?

I've just got the idea that the stuff on Steam needs an 3L33T Haxxxor 16 core Super 3000 to run the new games.

It'll be much easier if you just comply.

Most of the Source games are not new technology, so you don't need a state-of-the-art computer to run them. However, Intel GMA graphics completely suck, and you won't be able to get much gaming out of that MacBook.

You can forget about UT3 for the Mac. They have had every excuse they can come up with since the original announcement in 2007 that it would come out of the PC and Mac at the same time.

Unreal Tournamnet for Mac is nothing more than VAPORWARE..

Forget about it. You are better off running the PC version under WINE than even worrying about it coming out for the Mac.

Secondly, the game SUCKS. While it's really pretty to look at, the menus are horribly designed, it's next to impossible to get add-ons to work, and there's only about 20 people playing the game at any given time, if that many!

I still play UT2K4 and there are more people playing that old version than there are playing UT3.

Plus, I have a friend who works for Epic, and he tells me that UT3 for the Mac was SHELVED in 2008. They are not even trying to work on it anymore because of poor sales on the PC and all the console games.

Epic isn't doing the Mac port of UT3, they outsourced it to icculus (Ryan Gordon). It could very well be shelved, but Gordon has finished ports years after they left the market. He last twittered about UT3 this time last year:
@nvining GLSL compiler on Nvidia hardware still calls exit() for the shock core shader. Not sure how to fix that one yet.
12:27 AM May 18th, 2009 via web
I agree about the menus, but I haven't had too many problems with add-ons. And the nuisance of the menus is worth it since the game play is both smarter and more intense. UT2004 just feels too slow and "floaty" to me now.

And I really don't care much about online playing, I tend to play bots, all the way back to UT99 and Quake3. I just wanna shoot stuff for 10 mins or so.

Picking out some points to address

How would it be a game changer?
Even if Valve wasn't porting their games over, having Steam on OS X means other companies have a much easier way to publish games for the Mac. It will also provide companies with a good way to measure OS X game market, as Valve releases their hardware survey monthly. Many game companies already use it as one source of info to set their system specs for games. If OS X shows up on there with a decent percentage, a company may be more willing to invest a little more money in a port. After all, if it only costs 5% more of a game budget (hiring an extra programmer or two) to pull in 10-15% more sales, then why not? This will of course depend on how each game is built. Games for consoles and PCs already have money invested in not tying them to one exact technology, so a Mac port would be trivial.

I don't get why this is a big deal since Apple went Intel.
As others have pointed out, the reboot can be annoying. Not only for the time it takes, but the fact that you have to shut down everything on the OS X side first, then reboot into an OS missing bookmarks, IM programs and so on that see use on OS X. Sure, you can set up IM programs and bookmark syncing, but is it really worth all that hassle? With more games on OS X, Mac owners are going to ignore more and more PC only releases, as they can just fire up some other game without a major context switch. For me, it's one big reason I still play World of Warcraft over more recent PC only MMOs. During downtime, I'm being social with people in IRC, browsing the web or other activities. Activities I don't want to clone into Windows part of my system.

Plus, I have a friend who works for Epic, and he tells me that UT3 for the Mac was SHELVED in 2008.
Probably true, though as lpkmckenna pointed out, Ryan was doing the work anyhow. Epic themselves never invested much inhouse effort in any Mac port. Really a shame the Unreal engine has never had proper in house support from them, as it then becomes a big reason why third parties using the engine don't bring their games over. Epic needs to decide if they want to be a game company or an engine company, since with their current split attention, something suffers. Epic's bad support of their engine was bad enough that Silicon Knights sued Epic, a lawsuit that still hasn't been resolved.

Any bets on whether Steam is actually released today? I'm thinking just before midnight PST if it is, but I wouldn't be surprised to see another week tacked on either.

Wozers. Thanks. I opened up steam and got the message (which never appeared before).

Now comes the long long download wait.

(Now if only Star Trek Online worked in OS X... I'd never have to reboot)

I tried installing it on my laptop, but it just hung after it downloaded the first batch of updates. I assume the proxy we use at work threw it off. Guess I'll have to wait until I get home to give it a shot.

And has Valve made an announcement for the TF2 launch date? Here's hoping it's some time this week or next.

I'm having a buttload of issues with Steam. Performance is very slow even for a basic game such as Portal. The client itself is slow. Oh, yeah. It erased my Applications folder

Nobody’s addressed this question yet, and I’m wondering the same thing (well, 2.4GHz MacBook w/GMA3100, but you get the point). I’ll probably be upgrading to a 13" MBP or an iMac by the end of the year, but I’m wondering if there are any games worth trying now. I still got an account and Portal while it’s free, even though I may not be able to play it.

Darn....

Portal did seem a bit slow when I used it. Slower than when I ran it in Windows XP (though that was quite a long time ago).

I'm just happy nothing on my Mac got "nuked" by Steam.

That seems to be an extreme example. Scary as hell, but extreme. I do know of about a dozen people at work that downloaded the Steam client and things are working fine.

That said, so sorry to hear you lost your Apps folder imitchellg5.

It's okay... It was just a 20 minute TM restore away. I was talking to a friend and he noticed that Time Machine was backing up when it happened. I wonder if the two had a conflict.

I had the "download now" bug, but clicked through a link in Safari and it started to load. I played about 30 minutes of portal.

I am looking forward to playing HL2 and others without Windows!

Buggy as all hell. The download for Portal kept pausing and wouldn't resume, then kept telling me the game was ready. If I tried to launch the game it'd just freeze.

I hit the Resume All button, and Steam tanked. After Steam died, my entire computer slowed to a crawl. Clicking on a menu took about 8 seconds. I restarted my computer, then loaded Steam again. The game finally finished downloading.

Aslo, they're sticking the Steam data in the Documents folder. It should be located in /Library/Application Support. Apparently there's already a thread on the Steam forums with the general consensus, "OS X is not Windows. Please follow application programming guidelines."

My brother found an interesting bug. If your Steam and games are running really, really slow, unplug your Mighty Mouse. He found that Steam's performance tanked when his Mighty Mouse was plugged in, but not with a normal 2-button mouse.

I downloaded Steam and Portal, but haven't had too much time to play with it.

I have noticed a lack of Mac know-how in terms of the installation - I had to dig around the system to find out where stuff was being dumped. Applications, Application Support, Documents, the desktop... geez, what a mess. When asked to place an alias of the game on the desktop, it didn't make an alias it actually put the game on the desktop. doh! Heh, it's new and these guys are new to the platform, I imagine quite a few updates in rapid succession. I hope the selection of games improve as well.

Same problem, here, except for losing my Applications and Library folder. Portal also didn't like my Mighty Mouse. Within the menu, it worked (very slowly), but within the game, I couldn't turn or click. Plugged in a regular two-button optical mouse, and it worked fine. After that, plugged the Mighty Mouse back in and then worked properly. Basically, I have to have a non-Mighty Mouse plugged in at the start, then swap in my Mighty Mouse when the game is done loading (which takes forever).

Or *gasp* make a Steam folder in the Applications folder and put everything in there. That way, you don't have to re-fiddle with your Time Machine preferences so you're not backing up 4GB of steam stuff that was placed in your Documents folder.

I'm curious what Macs you guys are running that are having performance issues. Steam for me has been very quick, but I'm on a 2.8Ghz MBP with a solid state HD. I don't know the actual frame rates, but performance in Portal was just as good as Windows for me.

I wish all the data wasn't stored in the Documents folder, but other than that I am extremely pleased.

Wow. That fixed my performance issues.

I'm really disappointed by this half-assed release. When something is delayed, you expect it to be delayed because they are working out some final bugs. But apparently they didn't even use Steam on a Mac with a Mighty Mouse plugged in.

I just installed the whole Orange Box suite on my bootcamp partition.

The later a Source game gets, the slower FPS. Playing all games at max resolution for my iMac (1680x1050) settings all high (no AA) Radeon 2400 Mobility 128MB.

FPS averages
Half Life 2: ~50FPS
Episode 1: ~35FPS
Episode 2: ~25FPS
Portal: ~30FPS

Episode 2 can run damn near unplayable at times, hovering just above 10FPS thanks to its more advanced lighting and HDR. Portal runs smooth until you are within visual range of being able to see through a Portal at what is going on through the other side, still very playable.

The best, playability-wise, is certainly Half Life 2. not only is it the longest game the graphics still hold up really friggin well and it runs very smooth.

However, those of you with integrated cards might have to sacrifice resolution and/or quality to see decent framerates. Even then you won't see much of an increase. I switched Episode 2 to 480p, medium settings and barely gained 5 FPS on average. I eventually found that the FPS gap from max settings to low settings wasn't nearly enough for a visual hit.

I'm going to reboot into OSX and see how Portal runs there for a comparison.

Absolutely not, I was super happy with how well Half Life 2 ran, and any game made in 2005 or later basically won't run. I have to hand it to Valve, their old 2004 game not only has superb graphics but also runs really well on older hardware.

As far as I'm concerned, 35FPS is fine when you are running at full quality. I'm sure uber-gaming nerds would scoff at numbers like that but it didn't bother me one bit.

Alright, some bad news folks.

Downloaded Mac Portal and it runs VASTLY inferior compared to my Windows XP installation, despite having an extra gig of RAM to play with. The recommended options were actually lower as well.

1680x1050, Max settings, no AA.

Just sitting in the first room I was getting 20FPS, not good so far. First Portal spawns and I proceed to move through it....holy hell, 6FPS. Average of next few testchambers, 14FPS...with it dipping low in single digits if I am moving through a Portal that allows me to see myself. Unplayable.

Lowest res, Max settings, no AA.
Spikes as high as 80FPS, while moving through previously mentioned portal, FPS dips to single digits again, nearly unplayable and ugly.

1680x1050, lowest settings
Same as above, FPS in normal rooms 50+, shooting portals and moving about brings the game to a slideshow. Nearly unplayable and really ugly.

Dunno what the reason is, but Portal averages 30FPS in Windows XP, and 15FPS in Mac OSX. I'm going to exit everything, including Dashboard and see if that helps, I doubt it though.
