Lazy OP because following and sharing the news properly nowadays feels like a full time job. NYT and Guardian articles, two Channel 4 videos (so far), and god knows what else I missed.

Facebook fought the publication until Friday night when they hastily copped to the data misuse in a press release. Wylie, the whistleblower has coincidentally been suspended by facebook. CAs CEO has been suspended but a journalist noted that officially, CA is a shell corp for the parent company SCL in UK.

CA got its info from two academic researchers including one based in Russia. They also pitched a Russian petroleum company on targeting American voters because reasons.

The HPSCI will not call on Wylie to testify because the investigation is 'closed'.

Edit: Facebook stock is down 10% on the news. They had an employee meeting today to explain what was happening and Zuck reportedly was absent.

What else did I miss?

Someone on Reddit made a fairly detailed post/conspiracy theory about the connection between Facebook and Russia.

When I first saw all of the backlash against Facebook, I wasn't sure what it was about - the data was harvested by a couple of researchers and Facebook allegedly closed the holes used by those people.

But it looks like there are more direct connections between Russia and Facebook than just Russians buying a few ads.

Nothing in that post caught my attention, other than the reminder that Facebook got paid in rubles and didn't flinch. I assume they're in for a fun ride with the latest revelations, but honestly, they, twitter, and Reddit haven't been given the scrutiny they deserve. Possibly because our legislative branch is too tech illiterate to know they should care.

Eric Prince is linked to these guys, too
https://www.washingtonpost.com/world...=.848fface0dcc

Company filings show that Trump-affiliated data-mining firm Cambridge Analytica has a link to a Chinese security and logistics company run by Erik Prince, the former mercenary who founded private military company Blackwater.

British corporate records show that Alexander Nix, the suspended chief executive of Cambridge Analytica, is also director of a company called Emerdata Ltd. that was incorporated in August 2017.

Other Emerdata directors include people associated with Cambridge Analytica, along with Johnson Ko Chun Shun, who was appointed in January.

Ko is also deputy chairman of Hong Kong-based Frontier Services Group, whose chairman is Prince.

Erik Prince, Betsy Devos brother.

I feel like we need a room full of pinboards and string tying this all together.

A ball of twine nailed to the wall would be pretty accurate, I think.

While imagine the 'cleaning' started as soon as Channel 4 asked them for comment, the UK not being able to get a warrant on CA until today when this stuff has been coming out since Monday is crazy. What could possibly be left for them?

Oops
https://www.nbcnews.com/politics/ele...mpaign-n859526
Lawyers told Steve Bannon and other managers of data firm Cambridge Analytica in 2014 that only U.S. citizens should be "making decisions about U.S. election activity," but the Cambridge teams working on several congressional campaigns that year were largely composed of foreign nationals anyway, according to two former staffers.

As first reported by the New York Times, attorney Lawrence Levy of Bracewell & Giuliani sent a memo to Bannon, conservative megadonor Rebekah Mercer and Cambridge founder Andrew Nix that said Nix would have to be "recused from substantive management of any such clients involved in U.S. elections" because Nix is not a U.S. national.

(I admit the image cutting off before the legal advice seems fishy, but I'd like to make the Spotlight joke)

Cambridge Analytica is shitting down and so is its mother company.

Given that Emerdata exists, conventional wisdom is they're trying to pull a Blackwater and simply rebrand.

Former Trump campaign CEO and White House chief strategist Steve Bannon ordered Cambridge Analytica staff to test messaging around Russian President Vladimir Putin and Russian expansion in 2014, Cambridge Analytica whisteblower Christopher Wylie told House Democrats this week.
Pretty weird, right? I don't think this links into collusion, but I'd be curious what your guys take on Bannon's interest in Putin was.

https://www.wsj.com/articles/israeli...ica-1527030765
A company owned by Joel Zamel, an Israeli entrepreneur whose work has drawn the scrutiny of special counsel Robert Mueller, formed a strategic partnership with a data firm for President Donald Trump’s campaign in a joint bid to win business from the U.S. government and other clients after the 2016 election, according to people familiar with the matter.

The Psy-Group, one of Mr. Zamel’s firms, signed a memorandum of understanding with Cambridge Analytica LLC, a digital media firm that helped propel Mr. Trump to the presidency, these people said. Facebook Inc. in March suspended Cambridge over allegations that it improperly harvested the data of millions of Facebook users, accusations that in part led to the firm’s closure earlier this month.

This seems... aggressive. Indicative of something big?
https://www.theguardian.com/technolo...P=share_btn_tw

Parliament has used its legal powers to seize internal Facebook documents in an extraordinary attempt to hold the US social media giant to account after chief executive Mark Zuckerberg repeatedly refused to answer MPs’ questions.

The cache of documents is alleged to contain significant revelations about Facebook decisions on data and privacy controls that led to the Cambridge Analytica scandal. It is claimed they include confidential emails between senior executives, and correspondence with Zuckerberg.

Damian Collins, the chair of the culture, media and sport select committee, invoked a rare parliamentary mechanism to compel the founder of a US software company, Six4Three, to hand over the documents during a business trip to London. In another exceptional move, parliament sent a serjeant at arms to his hotel with a final warning and a two-hour deadline to comply with its order. When the software firm founder failed to do so, it’s understood he was escorted to parliament. He was told he risked fines and even imprisonment if he didn’t hand over the documents.
The documents seized were obtained during a legal discovery process by Six4Three. It took action against the social media giant after investing $250,000 in an app. Six4Three alleges the cache shows Facebook was not only aware of the implications of its privacy policy, but actively exploited them, intentionally creating and effectively flagging up the loophole that Cambridge Analytica used to collect data. That raised the interest of Collins and his committee.
The files are subject to an order of a Californian superior court, so cannot be shared or made public, at risk of being found in contempt of court. Because the MPs’ summons was issued in London where parliament has jurisdiction, it is understood the company founder, although a US citizen, had no choice but to comply. It is understood that Six4Three have informed both the court in California and Facebook’s lawyers.

Facebook said: “The materials obtained by the DCMS committee are subject to a protective order of the San Mateo Superior Court restricting their disclosure. We have asked the DCMS committee to refrain from reviewing them and to return them to counsel or to Facebook. We have no further comment.”
